Heading into Wednesday night's game against Valley Forge Christian College, the Lancaster Bible College men's basketball team had lost 10 straight games to the Patriots, dating back to the 2007-08 season. After senior
Kevin Keltner drained a 12-foot jumper with seven seconds remaining, it looked at though the Chargers would break the Patriots' hex on them.
One sprint down the floor, a great pass and layup later, the Chargers' losing streak against the Patriots had reached 11 and the score read 53-52 in favor of VFCC. Donnell Davis took the in-bounds pass the length of the floor and dished it under the basket to Michael Stum who sunk a layup with two seconds left to propel the Patriots to their 25th win of the season.
"We had a foul to give and we talked about fouling in the huddle, but we didn't want to put them on the line and give them a chance to win it from the free throw line," Chargers' Head Coach
Pete Beers said.
Prior to the exciting ending, each team went on long scoring runs in the second half. After being tied 23-23 at halftime, the Patriots went on a 6-0 run to open the second half, before the Chargers answered with an 11-0 run of their own.
"Maybe the best thing of the night was the fact that we controlled the pace for most of the game," Beers said. "Being able to do that and hold them to 53 points, I'm not sure I would have thought we could lose to them."
After falling behind, 34-29, with 11:20 to play, the Patriots went on a 20-5 run over the next 5:41and looked to be in control with a 10 point lead. The Chargers however would not quit and began mounting a comeback by knocking down free throws and making clutch shots.
"I think we found out that we can come back on teams," Beers said. "To fight back and look adversity in the eye and say 'we aren't going away' is a big thing for this team."
After
Kody Koser knocked down two free throws to bring the Chargers to within one at 51-50, LBC (10-14) got a defensive stop and worked the ball around to Keltner who hit his jumper from just left of the free throw line.
"That shot was huge for us at the time," Beers said of Keltner, one of the three seniors honored prior to the game. "The senior leadership on this team stepped up tonight and I would expect them to do that for the remainder of the season."
Keltner finished 15 points and eight rebounds, while fellow senior
Eric Nulf had 12 points and three rebounds.
Madison Warfel chipped in with nine points and six boards.
The Chargers will wrap up the regular season on Saturday when they host Penn State Berks at 2 p.m.
