The Lancaster Bible College men's basketball team wrapped up their regular season with three games this past week. After playing hard and coming up short against Rowan and Valley Forge Christian, the Chargers got back into the win column on Saturday, beating Penn State Berks, 86-69.
Kevin Keltner had 15 points and eight assists to lead LBC, while
Kody Koser added 17 points and seven rebounds. The Chargers finish the regular season with an 11-14 record, their second straight season finishing with double digit wins prior to the postseason. The last time the won double digit games in back-to-back seasons prior to the playoffs was 2005-06, 2006-07.
The Chargers shot 63 percent in the first half as they exploded for 45 points, 28 of them coming in the paint off of great passing plays. LBC had 15 of their 23 assists in the opening half.
"I thought our passing was great today," Chargers' Head Coach
Pete Beers said. "We looked for the extra pass and didn't force anything."
Beers said he was pleased with the play of
Brett Derr in the first half, who scored eight of his 12 points in the opening half, as well as Keltner's play throughout the entire game.
"Brett provided us with a big spark in the first half," Beers said. "I thought Kevin played with control the whole game and led the team well."
The Chargers scored 48 of their 86 points in the paint, something Beers said the Chargers talked about prior to the game.
"We wanted to work the ball down low and thought we could be successful if we did that," Beers said. "I like that it wasn't just the big guys scoring in the paint, but our guards as well."
Andrew Risser scored 10 points and added seven assists for LBC, something Beers was very pleased with.
"He made some great passes today and put a lot of players in a position to be successful," Beers said.
With the win, LBC moved to 2-0 this season against North Eastern Athletic Conference [NEAC] opponents. They defeated Gallaudet, 68-67, on January 12. LBC will be joining the NEAC next season and Beers was happy the team played well against future conference opponents.
"It's exciting," Beers said. "It will be nice to play those teams next season when the games have a bit more meaning."
LBC is off until Thursday when they host Philadelphia Biblical University in the NCCAA East Region Semi-Final at 8 p.m. The Chargers defeated PBU, 108-96 in double overtime, on December 11.
