By the time February rolls around for a college basketball team, a win is a win, no matter how pretty or ugly. Thursday night against Penn State York, the Lancaster Bible College men's basketball team displayed both kinds of basketball, but, a win is a win and that's what they got, 71-57.
Kevin Keltner had 18 points, six rebounds and four assists to lead the Chargers past a Penn State branch campus for the second straight game. LBC beat Penn State Altoona last Thursday, 84-70. Kevin's brother,
Keith Keltner helped spark the Chargers to a 7-0 early in the first half. LBC (8-11) also had an 11-0 run and a 10-1 run in the first half to help give them a 44-25 lead at halftime.
"We took good shots in the first half," Chargers' Head Coach
Pete Beers said. "We came here and did what we had to do and anytime you can get a win, you take it."
LBC's 10-1 run came at the end of the first half that included a 3-pointer by
Madison Warfel as time expired. The Chargers' ability to move the ball and get open looks helped them take a commanding lead heading into the break.
The Chargers did not let up after the break either, opening the second half on a 6-0 run.
"I thought we answered the bell in the second half as well," Beers said.
The Keltner's combined to score the team's first 10 points of the second half as the Chargers extended their lead to 28 with 14:59 remaining. LBC maintained a 20-point lead for much of the second half, before the Nittany Lions made up some points during the final minutes.
"I thought we got a little sloppy midway through the second half," Beers said. "We can't just coast when we are up big. Whoever is in the game needs to be playing 100 percent."
Kody Koser had his biggest output of the second semester, scoring 15 points. Warfel added 12 points, while
Keith Keltner finished with 13 points. The Chargers shot 47 percent (7-of-16) from beyond the arc, while the Nittany Lions shot just 16 percent (4-of-25).
The Chargers have a quick turnaround to the end of their week as they travel to La Plume, Pa. to take on Keystone College on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
"We will be ready for Saturday," Beers said. "Keystone is a good team, but if we play tough, we can compete with a lot of teams."
LBC lost to Keystone, 78-64 last season in Lancaster.
