Having beaten Mount Aloysius, 97-89 earlier this season, the Lancaster Bible College men's basketball team figured they weren't going to be in for a defensive battle on Monday night at Horst Athletic Center.
They were right.
The Chargers led by 20 at halftime and cruised a 91-76 win over the Mounties.
Madison Warfel had his first collegiate double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Chargers, while
Kody Koser had a game-high 19 points.
Koser scored the Chargers' first nine points as LBC jumped out to an 18-9 lead in the first seven minutes.
"Kody started us off in the right direction," Chargers' Head Coach
Pete Beers said. "I thought we did a good job staying disciplined tonight, which is hard to do against a team that is all over the place."
When Koser cooled off, the Chargers began throwing the ball into the paint, where
Erich Graybill and a host of others had their way. LBC scored 42 points int he paint for the game, 24 of them coming in the first half.
"Big E was great down low, and when
Eric Nulf got hurt and Koser was in foul trouble,
Benjamin Scott played some valuable minutes for us," Beers said.
Nulf's injury occurred late in the first half when he dove for the ball and smacked his head on the floor. He immediately grabbed his nose and it was determined later that it was in fact broken. He returned for the second half with a mask.
Though the Chargers held a 20 point lead, LBC stormed out of the gate in the second half and went on a 9-0 run in the first 2:47 of the second half.
Coming off Saturday's ugly loss at Keystone and not practicing in between games, Beers said he was proud of the way his team played.
"I commend the guys for playing hard for 40 minutes tonight," Beers said. "It doesn't erase Saturday, but we wanted it today and it was good to see that in the team."
LBC forced 28 turnovers, 17 of which were in the second half and scored 34 points off of those 28 turnovers.
"I thought we contested a lot of their shots and didn't let them get into a rhythm offensively," Beers said.
Forcing so many turnovers and scoring so many points, many of LBC's players had solid statistical nights, including Warfel and his aforementioned double-double.
"Madison had a couple of big plays for us tonight," Beers said. "For him to have 10 rebounds is big step for him and his game."
The Chargers are off until Saturday when they head to Brooklyn, New York to take on St. Joseph's [Brooklyn].
Notes:
-LBC scored 90 or more points for the 4th time this season, including the second time against Mount Aloysius. LBC scored 90 or more points seven times last season.
