Second Half Woes Plague Chargers in Loss to Gallaudet

If you wanted to watch a basketball game where one team put on a clinic of how to play like a team, then the Lancaster Bible College men's basketball team was your team in the first half.

If you wanted to watch a basketball game where one team basically forgot how to play team basketball and turned the ball over way too much, then the Lancaster Bible College men's basketball team was your team in the second half.

The Jekyll and Hyde show the Chargers displayed cost them in the second half as they lost to Gallaudet for the second time in six weeks. The Bison used a 45-point second half to defeat LBC, 72-55 on Wednesday at Horst Athletic Center.

Danny Kelly had 23 points and 12 rebounds to lead Gallaudet, while freshman Corey Leonard led LBC with 10 points on 5-of-5 shooting.

"We did a great job of getting good shots in the first half," Chargers' Head Coach Pete Beers said. "In the second half, we didn't take any good shots. The way our offense works is we need people to be open for good looks after everyone has worked hard to get someone that look."

LBC [2-9, 1-4 NEAC] shot just 25 percent [9-of-36] in the second half, including 0-of-9 from beyond the arc. They also turned the ball over nine times in the second half, compared to just five in the first half.

Gallaudet meanwhile came out very sluggish and couldn't keep up with the Chargers for much of the first half before ending the first half on a 9-4 run. The Bison [7-6, 5-0 NEAC] took it to LBC immediately in the second half, outscoring the Chargers, 11-4 in the first 3:30.

"Give Gallaudet credit for waking up and playing well in the second half," Beers said. " They came out a little slow, but really turned it on in the second half."

In addition to Kelly's game-high 23 points, Layton Seeber had 16 points and six boards, while Brandon McMillan added 11 points.

LBC's Madison Warfel had nine points, while fellow senior Andrew Risser had eight points and five rebounds.

"We have to ask ourselves if we are going to believe as a team," Beers said. "We need to do whatever it takes to win and believe in our purpose. Unfortunately, we got away from our purpose at times today. The potential is there, everyone can see it, we just need to perform better."

The Chargers will get a chance to fulfill that potential and play a full 40 minutes again on Saturday as they host SUNY Morrisville at 1 p.m.
