Winning Ugly
Something teams must do from time-to-time; winning when not playing your best
The word and definition above is the most accurate way to describe Wednesday afternoon's women's basketball game between Lancaster Bible College and Gallaudet University. While there were good moments, specifically the Chargers' play in the second half, much of the game was marred by turnovers [the teams combined for 46 of them] and poor shooting [the teams combined to shoot 35 percent from the floor].
In the end however, the Chargers' early second half run was the difference as they defeated Gallaudet for the second time this season, winning 58-36.
Brooklyn Wilson and
Lauren Heliger each had 13 points for the Chargers who improved to 4-6 overall and 4-2 in NEAC play.
"We had no confidence in ourselves or teammates in the first half," LBC Head Coach Doug Helsel said. "In the second half we acted like ourselves and good things happened. Obviously, it helps to have a lead to work with, but we worked hard to get that lead."
After leading 21-14 at halftime, the Chargers stormed out of the gate in the second half with a 16-4 run in the first 5:37. LBC tied a season-high with 45 rebounds [20 offensive boards] and took 27 more shots than the Bison [3-8, 1-4 NEAC].
"I thought we played defense really well most of the game, but we know we can do better on the offensive side of the floor," Helsel said. "We started slower than a diesel truck tonight, so obviously we need to fix that as well."
Emily Lloyd was the other Chargers' player in double figures with 10 points and eight rebounds. Freshman
Sarah Heilenman added 8 points and game-high 11 boards.
The Chargers will look to win any way possible again on Saturday as they host SUNY Morrisville at 3 p.m.
