Chargers Hold Off Late Mustang Surge to Win Second Straight

What appeared to be a blowout quickly became a dog fight on Saturday at Horst Athletic Center. The Lancaster Bible College women's basketball team was cruising to an easy victory, leading, 40-17 with 15:49 to play, when all of a sudden (and I mean all of a sudden), the Morrisville State offense woke up and began chopping away at the 23-point deficit piece by piece.

Just 8:07 later, the LBC lead was at five, 44-39, and the two teams battled the rest of the way before the Chargers pulled out a 56-49 victory, their second straight and third in four games.

Lauren Heliger led the Chargers with 18 points, nine assists and seven rebounds. Brooklyn Wilson added 14 points, while senior Brittney Becker had eight points and four rebounds.

"I thought we had confidence in ourselves and our teammates the entire game, which is very good," Chargers' Head Coach Doug Helsel said. "I told the team at halftime that Morrisville was a better team than they showed in the first half and we knew they were capable of having that type of a second half."

After righting the ship for a few minutes and increasing their lead back to eight, the Chargers once again found themselves fighting to keep their lead as the Mustangs closed the gap to two at 51-49 with 2:06 to play. Morrisville State would get no closer however, as a Becker jumper and Heliger free throws down the stretch iced the game for the Chargers and sent them to 5-6 overall and 5-2 in NEAC play.

"It seems like every game this season we have either been stronger than the other team or they have been stronger than us," Helsel said. "Today was an even matchup and I'm happy to see us come out on top."

The Chargers will take to the road on Wednesday night, looking for their first three-game winning streak since February 2007. LBC will face the College of St. Elizabeth at 7:30 p.m. in Morristown, N.J.
