A storyline has begun to develop around the Lancaster Bible College men's basketball season and it isn't a good one. The basic plot involves the Chargers playing well for a period of time, then going cold while the other team heats up and extends the lead just out of the reach of LBC.
It happened again on Friday night, as it has over the past four games, the Chargers work hard to get a lead and simply go ice cold offensively and the opposing team can't miss. The Chargers led 28-23 at halftime, but SUNYIT answered quickly, and opened the second half on a 10-0 run and opened a lead they would never relinquish as they held on for a 65-54 victory over the Chargers.
The Wildcats [2-14 overall, 1-5 NEAC] shot 69 percent [11-of-18] in the second half, including 5-for-5 from beyond the arc, while LBC shot just 29 percent [8-of-28].
"SUNYIT finished well in the second half," Chargers' Head Coach
Pete Beers said. "I'm not sure they had better looks in the second half, they just made their shots."
Sejad Gromilic and Alex Grimmer led the way for SUNYIT with 14 points each. Grimmer was 4-of-6 from beyond the arc, accounting for half of SUNYIT's eight 3-pointers. Gromilic, who played all 40 minutes, added five assists and three boards to his 14 points.
LBC's
Keith Keltner led all scorers with 17 points, while also grabbing nine boards. He has 38 points in his last two games and has been one of the Chargers' positives in the second semester.
"Keith is playing at a high level right now," Beers said. "He is working hard and leading the team on the court."
Andrew Risser had nine points and eight rebounds for LBC [2-11 overall, 1-6 NEAC], and
Darrell Epps added 10 points for the Chargers who lost for the fourth straight time.
"We can't seem to get our effort together," Beers said. "All of the guys give effort, we just can't seem to find the right five to put on the floor right now. It seems like though we are giving effort, we are hesitant at times and I'm not sure why."
The Chargers will have little time to think about Friday night's loss as they host Cazenovia on Saturday at 1 p.m. Beers didn't think that would be a bad thing after a tough loss.
"I expect the guys to pick it up and play well on Saturday," Beers said.
For the Chargers' sake, they hope to edit the storyline that has begun to define their season and take the first step to writing a fairy tale ending.
