In order to beat a good team, the other team must shoot well and play well defensively. The Lancaster Bible College women's basketball team provided glimpses of those two items on Friday night at Horst Athletic Center, but not nearly enough of them as they lost to conference-leader SUNYIT, 73-47.
The Chargers began the game on a 5-0 run and appeared to catch SUNYIT off guard, however, the Wildcats quickly regained their composure and answered back with an 11-0 run of their own and were off and running to a 20-point halftime lead, 41-21. Kayla McNeil led four SUNYIT players in double figures with 13 points, while Kwanisha Jones, Nailah Cherry and Lyndsey Brognano each added 12 points. Jones added six assists to her 12 points, while Cherry had eight boards to go along with her 12 points.
LBC's
Emily Lloyd had 13 points and nine rebounds for LBC, while
Brooklyn Wilson had 12 points and
Lauren Heliger added 11 points.
"I was pleased with how we hit the glass against a bigger team, but we had no flow offensively and it cost us," LBC Assistant Coach Adam Surguine said.
LBC shot just 36 percent for the game and only had seven buckets in the first half, while the Wildcats [13-2 overall, 7-0 NEAC] shot 51 percent for the game and were 16-of-29 from the floor in the opening half.
"I thought both teams played hard, but they have a lot of players who can score many different ways," Surguine said.
Case in point, the Wildcats were 7-of-14 from beyond the arc, but also outscored LBC, 34-14 in the paint.
The Chargers [5-8 overall, 5-4 NEAC] have dropped two straight games, but will get a chance to right the ship on Saturday afternoon when they host Cazenovia at 3 p.m.
"We need to be ready for tomorrow and execute the way we know how to," Surguine said.
