The Lancaster Bible College men's basketball coaches will all tell you that they need to play defense and grind out victories. I think they will take scoring 50 points in a half too.
That's exactly what the Chargers did on Saturday against Cazenovia as they snapped a four-game losing streak with an 80-67 victory over the Wildcats.
Darrell Epps had a game-high 25 points on 9-of-13 shooting, while senior
Erich Graybill added six points and 13 rebounds.
"Darrell played with control and dominated play at times today," Chargers' Head Coach
Pete Beers said.
And while Beers was pleased with the Chargers' play on the offensive side of the court, he thought LBC won the game on the defensive side of the court. Cazenovia's Matt Perry, coming off a 31-point, 14-rebound performance the game before, was held to four points on 1-of-7 shooting, due in-large part to freshman
Corey Leonard's defensive effort.
"Corey did an unbelievable job of guarding [Perry]," Beers said. "it was a tremendous job by him and the rest of the team on the defensive side of the floor."
Keith Keltner, the Chargers' leading scorer the past two games, had 12 points and four boards for LBC, but Beers was more impressed with Keltner's leadership than any of his stats.
"Keith is leading this team right now," Beers said. "He has really stepped up."
Beers also credited
Brett Derr with playing solid defense and Graybill with crashing the boards.
"I thought Brett gave us some good minutes today and Big E found himself," Beers said. "I think there is some pride in this team and we know we haven't played our best basketball the past few games."
The Chargers [3-11 overall, 2-6 NEAC] host Penn St. Abington on Tuesday night at 6 p.m., hoping to win any way they can. Grind out win or 50-point half, the coaches won't mind either way.
