After completing one of the most improbable comebacks in program history on Tuesday night, one might have expected a letdown from the Lancaster Bible College men's basketball team on Thursday night. Good thing arch-rival Philadelphia Biblical was coming to town to make sure the Chargers were focused and prepared.
The two teams engaged in a grinding pace with the Chargers coming out on top, 65-55 for their third straight win.
Keith Keltner had a double-double for LBC with 15 points and 12 rebounds, while senior
Madison Warfel had 14 points and five boards.
The Crimson Eagles opened the game on a 7-0 run and led 13-4 less than four minutes into the game. LBC remained calm and answered back with a 9-1 run of their own to take a 15-14 lead with 13:12 to play in the opening half. The teams traded buckets for the rest of the half and Keltner's jumper with 57 seconds to play gave the Chargers a two-point halftime lead at 30-28.
The Chargers, like PBU in the first half, used a big run to begin the second half, scoring 11 of the first 14 points en route to a 41-31 lead at the 14:42 mark. Once again the teams traded buckets for a few minutes, but another mini-run gave the Chargers a 16-point advantage at 55-39 and it appeared LBC would cruise to another victory over PBU.
However, just like LBC did on Tuesday against Penn St. Abington, the Crimson Eagles would not go away and a jumper by Claude Chalk with 3:31 to play made it 56-50 LBC. After a Chargers' timeout, Keltner hit a jumper to push the lead to eight and the Crimson Eagles never challenged LBC again as the Chargers made five of six free throws down the stretch to secure the 10-point victory.
"It was a total team effort tonight," Chargers' Head Coach
Pete Beers said. "We grinded it out for sure."
The LBC coaching staff reminded the team prior to the game that even though Tuesday's win was great, PBU was going to push them the entire night.
"We knew PBU was going to play hard and sure enough, they played hard the whole game," Beers said. "I was proud of the guys that we played hard the whole time as well, especially when our shots weren't going in. We continued to grind."
For the second straight game, LBC senior
Travis Weyandt provided a spark for the Chargers and played a hard 20 minutes, scoring eight points and adding three steals.
"Travis played well again," Beers said. "He got a little excited at times, but he has really stepped up, just like all of the seniors on this team."
Though they won for the third straight time and beat the Crimson Eagles for the sixth straight time, Beers thought there were things the Chargers could have done better.
"We missed rotations on defense at times and in late January, that can't happen," Beers said. "We turned the ball over a few too many times as well, but again we played hard and battled to the end."
The Chargers [5-11 overall, 3-6 NEAC] return to NEAC play on Saturday when they head North on Route 222 to battle Penn St. Berks. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
"Saturday will be a challenge," Beers said. "I like to think we have something going here, but we still need to work hard and play well."
Notes:
-The Chargers have not lost to the Crimson Eagles since the 2006-07 season.
