Right play, right shooter, just missed.
Down one with 2.4 seconds to play, the Lancaster Bible College men's basketball team drew up the play to win them the game.
Andrew Risser inbounded the ball to fellow senior
Madison Warfel who put up a 3-pointer as time expired. It looked good the whole way and then clanked off the front of the rim.
Penn St. Berks 66, Lancaster Bible 65.
"It was a good game, even though we didn't come out on top," Chargers' Head Coach
Pete Beers said. "We did some good things, but 20 turnovers is too many and we had lapse in the second half where we weren't very good defensively."
Darrell Epps led all scorers with 20 points as he was 5-of-11 from the field and 7-9 from the free throw line.
Andrew Risser added 14 points and seven rebounds in 40 minutes, while Warfel had 11 points.
"Risser had a nice game today and Darrell shot the ball well," Beers said. "I thought the whole team gave a better effort than they did on Thursday night."
LBC [5-12 overall, 3-7 NEAC] trailed by just one at halftime, 29-28, after trailing 20-7 with 8:30 left in the half. Neither team led by more than six in the second half and after
Keith Keltner hit a 3-pointer with 1:27 to play, the Chargers trailed by just two at 62-60.
After a Nittany Lions' layup, Epps drained another three to cut the deficit to one at 64-63 with 1:08 left. After forcing a Penn St. Berks turnover, Warfel missed a 3-pointer, but
Erich Graybill grabbed the offensive rebound and was fouled. He hit both shots from the line and gave LBC a one-point lead with 28 seconds to play.
Connor Hough's layup nine seconds later gave the lead back to the Nittany Lions at 66-65. After a Penn St. Berks timeout, the Chargers took the ball down the floor and after not being able to run the play they wanted, called timeout with 2.4 seconds to play. Unfortunately for LBC, everything went right except the ball going through the hoop.
"It would have capped a great week if we could have pulled out a win today. I think we missed the crazies of Charger Nation," Beers said of the student section that has been so helpful of the Chargers of late.
Regardless, LBC had a very good week. They won one of the most exciting games in program history on Tuesday, coming back from 24 points down to win in overtime and defeated rival Philadelphia Biblical on Thursday, 65-55.
"We need to get some rest on Sunday and be ready to practice on Monday," Beers said. "We have an important game on Wednesday with Penn St. Harrisburg."
That game, against NEAC South Division leading Penn St. Harrisburg will be Wednesday at 6 p.m.
Notes:
-Saturday was the third time this season Epps has scored 20+ points in a game this season.
