Signs of Life

For as bad as the end of 2011 was for the Lancaster Bible College men's basketball team, 2012 is shaping up just fine.

The Chargers won their second game in a row on Friday night, defeating Wells, 65-62 in Aurora, N.Y. to improve to 2-7 overall and 1-2 in NEAC play. Madison Warfel had a team-high 20 points for LBC, while freshman Kurt Keltner added 12 points for the Chargers who are 2-0 in the new year. The win is the first-ever NEAC victory for the men's basketball program.

LBC's first NEAC game since December 1 did not start out well as the Chargers found themselves down by 12 midway through the first half. LBC cut the deficit to seven by halftime [34-27] and used an 10-0 run to open the second half to take a 37-34 lead with 17:17 to play. Warfel had eight of ten points during the 10-0 run for LBC.

"I thought Madison stepped up tonight," Chargers' Head Coach Pete Beers said. "Especially when we were down early and again during our run to open the second half."

Wells would not go away however and regained the lead at 41-40 with 15:56 to play, but once again LBC showed the focus and determination that had been missing for much of the first semester and went on a 7-0 run to take a six point lead with 11:52 left in the second half.

After the teams traded baskets for a few minutes, Wells eventually regained the lead 59-58 with 3:36 left. The Express went cold from the floor though as the Chargers sank their free throws and took a 63-59 lead with 27 seconds to play. Wells' EJ Taylor drained a three pointer with 19 seconds left to cut the lead to one, but LBC made two of four free throws and forced a turnover to seal the three point win.

"This is a big win for us," Beers said. "We shook things up a bit with the way we played and our starting line-up, but I thought we did a good job in every aspect of the game."

In addition to Warfel, Beers thought Kurt Keltner played well as did the LBC defense.

"Kurt played phenomenally on both ends of the floor," Beers said. "I thought our defense played a good all-around game, even though their big guy basically scored at will."

The Chargers will look to stay perfect in 2012 and extend their winning streak to three on Saturday when they face Keuka at 1 p.m.
