Balanced Attack Leads Chargers Past Ravens

Box Score Heading into Tuesday night's home opener against Rosemont, the Lancaster Bible women's basketball team basically took the game as its second season-opening game. After defeating Eastern to open the season on November 17, the team has had nine days of practice or off time and thus Tuesday's home opener almost felt like as though the reset button had been hit.

Overcoming foul trouble that plagued them all game, the Chargers had five players score in double figures as they defeated the Ravens, 81-73 and improved to 2-0 for the first time since the 2006-07 season. Freshman Aubrey Folger had a team-high 19 points and 8 rebounds to lead the Chargers, while sophomore Brooklyn Wilson added 17 points.

Folger scored the team's first eight points in the second half and her ability to drive to the basket and shoot mid-range jumpers gave Rosemont trouble all evening.

"She contested well on defense and to come down and play that well offensively is great," Chargers' Head Coach Doug Helsel said. "She makes great decisions. It's unbelievable to get that from a freshman."

The aforementioned foul trouble caused the Chargers to play many different rotations of players in the second half. After committing just eight turnovers in the first half, LBC turned the ball over 19 times in the second half and allowed the Ravens back in the game after leading by as many as 16 points in the first half.

However, the Chargers hit big shot after big shot, both free throws and field goals, and never trailed in the second half. LBC finished the game 25-of-37 from the free throw line, including 16-of-23 in the second half.

"We don't want to give up 73 points, but it's nice to see we can play a little crazy and win," Helsel said. "It seemed we either hit big shots or turned the ball over the whole second half."

One of the players hitting big shots in the second half was Lauren Heliger who had 16 points and 7 steals for the game, while fellow senior Emily Lloyd had 11 points and 6 rebounds. Sarah Heilenman was the final LBC player in double digits with 10 points and she added 8 rebounds and 6 assists.

"It was nice to see such balanced scoring," Helsel said. "I think we can limit the turnovers and get this type of production, we are going to be in good shape."

The Chargers are back in action on Thursday night when they host Trinity [D.C.] at 7 p.m.
