Aubrey Folger collected her first collegiate double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds and led the Chargers to their third straight victory with a 61-47 win over Trinity [D.C.] on Thursday night at Horst Athletic Center.
For the second straight game, the Chargers had at least four players score in double figures as
Emily Lloyd (12),
Brooklyn Wilson (11) and
Lauren Heliger (10) all joined Folger in double digits. Lloyd added seven rebounds to her 12 points, while Wilson had five assists and Heliger six assists.
The game was ugly for much of the first half as the teams shot poorly from the field and combined for 26 turnovers. When the Chargers took a timeout with just over 11 minutes to play, the score was tied at 5-5 and the teams were a combined 2-for-23 from the field.
"Trinity's athleticism took us out of our rhythm," Chargers' Head Coach Doug Helsel said. "This is the first time we've played a team that athletic this season and it took us a little while to adjust. I thought we looked pretty good when we were in rhythm."
Despite the offensive troubles, Helsel thought the team played well defensively, especially after giving up 73 points to Rosemont two nights ago.
"At halftime (with the score, 29-22 LBC) we made it a goal to hold them under 50 points," Helsel said. "I'm happy we were able to do that and hold them to 25 percent shooting."
The Chargers, who are 3-0 for the first time since the 2005-06 season, play their next three games against North Eastern Athletic Conference [NEAC] opponents, beginning with Wilson next Wednesday in Chambersburg, Pa. The opening stretch will see the Chargers play three games in four days, something Helsel is a bit concerned about.
"We obviously want to win these early conference games, but I"m not overly concerned with that," Helsel said. "It's the three games in four days that I'm more worried about, especially with some of the injuries we have."
Helsel added that though he is concerned, it is not an excuse and the Chargers must take care of business.
"We need to win the games we are supposed to win and even steal some games we may not be supposed to win," Helsel said. "I want our team to focus on how we are playing and that we are consistent."
After playing Wilson on Wednesday, the Chargers travel to Penn St. Harrisburg on Thursday and will host Gallaudet on Saturday, December 8.
Notes:
-The best start in LBC history came during the 2002-03 season when the Chargers began the season 6-0.
-With the win, the Chargers remain the only undefeated team in the NEAC.
