Chargers Hang With NCAA Division II Wilmington

Box Score With first semester final exams behind them, the Lancaster Bible women's basketball team took on another challenge Thursday night in playing NCAA Division II member, Wilmington. Hopefully the Chargers did as well on their finals as they did on Thursday night.

The Chargers led several times throughout the game, but ran out of gas down the stretch, falling to the Wildcats, 72-61. The loss drops the Chargers to 5-2 this season, but the game means a lot more to LBC than just the final score. They played with an NCAA Division II team for almost 40 minutes and did plenty of things well, if not better, than the Wildcats.

"I thought we did a nice job tonight," Chargers' Head Coach Doug Helsel said. "We played well as a team and played very smart. I like that we scored a lot of different ways."

Leading the scoring effort was freshman Aubrey Folger who had a game-high 18 points and 11 rebounds. Folger was 8-of-13 from the field and four of her 11 rebounds were on the offensive end.

"Aubrey had a standout performance once again," Helsel said. "With Aubrey playing so well and Emily Lloyd adding 10 rebounds, that is great for us."

Helsel was also happy with how the Chargers took care of the ball and spread the ball around on offense.

"We cut down on our turnovers and that kept us in the game," Helsel said. "We had a good spread in scoring as well with four players scoring in double figures."

Senior Lauren Heliger and sophomore Sarah Heilenman each scored 12 points as well for LBC.

Helsel thought the difference in the game came from the Wildcats (3-10) being able to put many different looks on the floor and get scoring from everyone.

"They were a deep team," Helsel said. "They had 10 of the 12 girls who played score points for them. In my mind, the big difference was they put a full 40 minutes together."

The Chargers hope the way they played can help them on Saturday when they wrap-up the first semester by hosting Baptist Bible.

"Hopefully we can continue the positive trend in our play," Helsel said. "We are gearing up for Baptist, that's the one we want and we want to end the semester on a good note."

Saturday's tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. due to graduation being held on campus earlier in the day.
