Box Score The Lancaster Bible women's basketball team ended the first semester on a high note on Saturday, defeating Baptist Bible, 60-42 behind forwards
Emily Lloyd and
Aubrey Folger. Lloyd, a senior, had a game-high 17 points and 13 rebounds, while Folger, a freshman, had 15 points and 13 rebounds of her own.
The victory, LBC's first over the Defenders since the 2002-03 season, moves the Chargers to 6-2 this season and marks the first time since the 2005-06 season LBC has had a winning record at Christmas Break.
Both teams struggled early in the first half to find the basket, but play eventually began to pick as Lloyd and Folger began to show their dominance inside. Lloyd had 10 points at halftime and after some early struggles of her own, began scoring easy baskets.
"Emily started a little slow, but she played very well today," Chargers' Head Coach Doug Helsel said. "I think our size was the difference today. The plan was not to settle for jump shots, because we thought we could get a lot of good looks around the basket."
The Chargers led 35-25 at halftime, but it was the Defenders who opened the second half on a 8-0 run to cut the deficit to two. LBC rebounded however and scored the game's next 10 points over a six-minute stretch to take a 45-33 lead with 10:27 to play.
"We withstood their early run in the second half and started make stops," Helsel said. "We didn't want to call too many timeouts, because we are trying to learn how to let the game come to us. We are learning to be patient and play through some things."
LBC began to wear down the Defenders (1-8) late in the second half as Folger, Lloyd and
Sarah Heilenman gave LBC the added boost down low and took the ball right to the basket. Heilenman finished with nine points, as did senior
Lauren Heliger.
Helsel said it was nice to beat BBC for the first time in his coaching career, but added the Chargers still have lots to work on.
"We are making progress, but we've got work left to do," Helsel said. "I think we had 12 first half turnovers and against a better team that isn't going to cut it."
Helsel also said he was happy with the team's 6-2 record at the break, but is more concerned with their execution and focus on the court rather than the record of the team.
"There wasn't really a goal record to have at the break, but on October 15 [first day of practice] if you would've told me we were going to be 6-2, I would've taken it. We are trying to focus on execution and performance rather than wins at this point. I thought we executed very well on Thursday night [at NCAA Division II Wilmington] and we were pretty good today."
The Chargers return to the hardwood on Saturday, January 5 when they host Wells at 1 p.m.

-LBC's last win over BBC came in the 2003 NCCAA East Region Final, 64-61.
