Chargers Get Back to Winning

Box Score Saturday marked the culmination of a four-day whirlwind experience for the Lancaster Bible women's basketball team. Three games in four days, all of which were North Eastern Athletic Conference games, an internal team issue that caught the team off guard and Finals Week begins this Monday.

Saturday afternoon created an opportunity for the Chargers to end their crazy week with not only a win, but a sense of how much a team can overcome if it is willing to stick together.

It wasn't pretty, but the Chargers finished the week with a win as they defeated Gallaudet, 51-38 at Horst Athletic Center to improve to 5-1 overall and 2-1 in NEAC play.

The Chargers forced 18 first-half turnovers and held the Bison to just 10 points. LBC had just as much difficulty scoring for much of the first half as well, but hit a few shots late in the first half to take a 24-10 lead into halftime.

Both teams played better in the second half, but the Chargers were able to squash every run the Bison made and won by 13 points.

"We needed a boost today and it was nice to earn the win," Chargers' Head Coach Doug Helsel said. "I'm proud of the girls for playing hard today as they battled heavy legs and heavy hearts. We battled and got the job done."

Senior Lauren Heliger led the Chargers with 15 points and eight rebounds, while Aubrey Folger added 11 points, five boards and five steals.

Helsel said Folger continues to show her skills in a new way every game.

"She's so long and is quicker than she looks," Helsel said. "She is smart and reads the play very well. And when Heilenman is in the game, it's like having two of the same person in. It's working out thus far."

Claire Tucker led the Bison (2-3, 0-2 NEAC) with 12 points, while Lindsay Stergio had six points, six boards and six assists.

The Chargers will take it easy for the next couple of days as the ladies take their final exams, but the team will play twice before departing for Christmas Break. LBC's first game is Thursday night when they take on NCAA Division II Wilmington University in Wilmington, Del. at 7 p.m. The Chargers have not faced a Division II team since the 2002-03 season when they lost to Bluefield State, 81-22.

LBC's final game before break is on Saturday when they host Baptist Bible at 4 p.m.

Helsel said the team hasn't thought much about next week yet as this week took everything they had to get through.

"The goal was to survive this week and we did," Helsel said. "We were focused today and didn't want to drop two conference games before Christmas Break. Thursday and Saturday give us an opportunity for a fresh start and a chance to wrap up the first semester on a good note."
