A forgettable week of basketball reached its conclusion on Friday night for the Lancaster Bible College men's basketball team. After playing poorly on Monday and coming up just short on Wednesday, the Chargers hosted St. Joseph's [Brooklyn] on Friday and though one wouldn't think things could get worse - they did.
A dispirited effort by the Chargers led them to their third straight loss as the Bears won, 75-52. The loss moves LBC to 6-16 this season and the 16 losses are the most since 2008-09 when the team finished 10-17.
The Chargers trailed by just one at halftime, 32-31, but were outscored 43-21 in the second half due in large part to LBC's poor shooting. The Chargers shot just 25% [7-of-28] from the field in the second half and were 0-of-7 from beyond the arc. For the game, LBC was 1-of-15 from behind the 3-point line, their worst percentage of the season.
"I'm disappointed with the effort," Chargers' Head Coach
Pete Beers said. "I'm disappointed with myself and I'm disappointed with our team."
At the end of the first half, the Chargers trailed by five points, 32-27, with 21 seconds remaining. After a
Travis Weyandt layup cut the deficit to three, LBC stole the ball and with one second remaining,
Keith Keltner found
Dan Karl alone under the basket for a layup that trimmed the deficit to one.
"I thought the end of the first half would propel us going forward," Beers said. "It ended up putting us to sleep."
Darrell Epps led LBC with 16 points, while freshman
Corey Leonard had 10 points and four rebounds. Senior
Brett Derr had a game-high 11 rebounds and his play greatly impressed Beers.
"
Brett Derr's hustle was outstanding," Beers said. "He had some big rebounds for us."
The Chargers have three regular season games remaining, beginning on Tuesday when they face Penn St. Abington in Abington, Pa. The game is a re-match of January 24th's overtime thriller that saw LBC comeback from 24 points down to force overtime and win the game. Tuesday's tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
Notes:
-The win is the first for St. Joseph's [Brooklyn] over LBC. The Bears were 0-3 previously against the Chargers.
