As the regular season has winded down for the Lancaster Bible College men's basketball team, it has become apparent that if the team wants to succeed, they will need to play like a team for a full 40 minutes. In recent games, it didn't appear the team was interested in playing together, but Tuesday night in Abington, Pa., though they came up just short, the Chargers played hard and together for a full 40 minutes.
Penn St. Abington hung on to defeat LBC, 90-86, but with two games left in the regular season and at least one NCCAA East Region playoff game on tap, the Chargers have reason to believe that they still have some important basketball to play.
Darrell Epps had a team-high 22 points, while
Keith Keltner had 18 points and 12 rebounds for the Chargers.
Dan Karl had a career-high 17 points and six rebounds as well for LBC and
Madison Warfel added 11 points.
"We played much better as a team tonight," Chargers' Head Coach
Pete Beers said. "We competed well and did some nice things as a unit. We just came up short."
Penn St. Abington's Mike Marvin, who torched the Chargers for 30 points and 13 rebounds in the first game between these two teams, had 21 points and 13 boards on Tuesday to lead the Nittany Lions. Josh Howard had a game-high 26 points as well for Abington.
With the score tied, 69-69, Abington used a quick, 7-0 run in just over two minutes to take a lead they would not give up. The Chargers cut the Abington lead to three two different times, but would not get closer.
"We turned the ball over too many times and some of those bad turnovers ended up really hurting us," Beers said.
One of LBC's biggest tests of the season comes on Thursday night when they travel down the turnpike to Phoenixville, Pa. to face NCCAA East Region rival Valley Forge Christian. With a win, the Chargers would earn the East Region's top seed and host the NCCAA East Region title game next week. A loss would put them in the semi-finals against Philadelphia Biblical.
Thursday's tip-off is set for 8 p.m.
