Chargers Battle, Fall to SUNYIT in NEAC Playoffs

They say all good things must come to an end. So even though the Lancaster Bible College women's basketball season ended on Saturday evening, it was most certainly good...and successful.

The Chargers' run in the NEAC playoffs ended on Saturday when the Chargers lost to top-seeded SUNYIT, 69-67. Just over a month ago, the Chargers lost to SUNYIT by 26 points, 73-47 in Lancaster. Saturday, LBC limited their mistakes and got huge games from Lauren Heliger [29 points], Emily Lloyd [10 points, seven rebounds] and Sarah Heilenman [19 points, eight rebounds], but fell just short of a spot in the NEAC Championship Game.

"We played a really nice game," Chargers' Head Coach Doug Helsel said. "We thought we had them at the end, the scales just tipped the other way."

Heliger's 29 points are a career high, as are Heilenman's 19 points.

"Lauren carried us scoring wise, and Emily and Sarah made some huge plays for us," Helsel said. "We are disappointed with the result, but obviously very happy with everyone's effort today."

With the loss, LBC's best season since 1998-99 comes to a close. The Chargers' 15 wins are the most since the 1998-99 season and their winning percentage is the best since the 2004-05 team went 13-11.

"We are all really happy with the season and the 15 wins are a great accomplishment," Helsel said. "We are excited for next season already."

The end of the season also means the end of a collegiate career for senior Brittney Becker.

"We are going to miss her leadership terribly," Helsel said. "She has been a great example for the younger players and I think because of her leadership, we will have great leaders in the coming years. She has been a big part of this program."

Becker added that she has greatly enjoyed her time as both a member of the basketball and volleyball teams.

"I've had an overall great experience on both teams," Becker said. "I've learned a lot and grown as a person, athlete, friend and leader. I've been blessed to make lifelong friendships and memories I will never forget. God has ben so good and so faithful and the thanks goes to Him. I'm so thankful to have had the privilege to play college sports for the coaches I've played for and with the friends and teammates I've played with."

And so like the Chargers' season, Becker's run as a two-sport athlete comes to a close. But like the team's success this year, though it has ended, it can definitely be considered good.
