Lauren Heliger tied a career-high with 27 points, while
Brooklyn Wilson had 11 points and six rebounds to lead the Lancaster Bible College women's basketball team past SUNY Cobleskill, 55-52 on Saturday in Cobleskill, N.Y.
With the win and a Penn St. Berks loss, the Chargers now have a 2 1/2 game lead over the Lady Lions for the third and final NEAC South Division playoff spot with four conference games remaining. Saturday's win however, did not come easy.
After leading by 12 at halftime and by 20 with 9:21 to play, the Chargers gave up an 18-0 run to the Fighting Tigers over the next 8:03 and led by just two points with 1:18 to play. After both teams turned the ball over in the final minute, Wilson drained a 3-pointer with 12 seconds to play to give the Chargers a five-point lead. A late layup by SUNY Cobleskill cut the lead to three, but they would not score again.
"We certainly didn't play a full 40 minutes tonight, but Brooklyn's 3-pointer at the end was huge," Chargers' Head Coach Doug Helsel said. "We wanted to beat a team with a winning record this season and we not only accomplished that, but we got a big road win in the process."
Leading the way was Heliger who had 16 of her 27 points in the second half. She was 9-of-10 from the free throw line and scored 20 or more points for the eighth time in 20 games.
"Lauren played one of her better games of the season today," Helsel said. "She did a lot of things well."
Of the four NEAC opponents left to play before the playoffs begin, the Chargers are 2-2. Three of the four games will be at Horst Athletic Center, starting with next Saturday's game against Wilson.
Prior to Saturday's game, the Chargers [10-10, 8-6 NEAC] will travel to Washington, D.C. on Wednesday to take on Trinity Washington. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
