Men's Volleyball Weekly Recap

In a week that saw the Lancaster Bible College men's volleyball team play three of the top 20 teams in the NCAA Division III rankings, the Chargers continue to show how much they have improved. Below is a recap of the past week's matches.

Saturday, March 24:
#13 Elmira 3, Lancaster Bible 1
25-19, 25-19, 22-25, 25-22

Philadelphia Biblical 3, Lancaster Bible 1
25-12, 25-20, 19-25, 25-15

The Chargers hung tough against two of the best teams in Division III at Langhorne as they took a set from each match. LBC had 38 kills in the opening match, led by A.J. Longacre's eight. Alex Bahn had four kills, 25 assists and 16 digs as well for the Chargers. 

In the second match, the Chargers took a set from the Crimson Eagles after being shutout earlier in the year. Longacre once again led LBC with eight kills, while Jesse Corbin and Joey Brennen had six kills each. Andy Nguyen added 10 digs, while Bahn had 26 assists. 

"I think taking a set from PBU and finishing our next couple of matches will be the deciding factor of our guys thinking our season was a success," Chargers' Head Coach Evelyn Long said. "Our match against Northland International was a definite turning point in our season. If we can keep that change in desire that we've made, I think we can finish strong and have our heads held high at what we've accomplished."

Monday, March 26:
Lancaster Bible 3, Gallaudet 0
25-14, 25-17, 25-7

Though the match didn't count in the statistical column for the Chargers due to the Bison still being a club team, LBC nonetheless got to play the entire roster and get many players key playing time. It was the second win of the season for the Chargers against Gallaudet as they defeated them 3-0 at the SUNYIT Tournament to begin the season.

Friday, March 30:
Newbury 3, Lancaster Bible 2
28-30, 25-20, 19-25, 26-24, 15-11

#14 Baruch 3, Lancaster Bible 0
25-15, 25-15, 25-23

Dan McAllister, Brennen and Longacre each had 12 kills, but it was not enough as LBC lost in five sets. The match was the third five-set match the Chargers have played this season and unfortunately, they are 0-3 in those matches. Bahn had 47 assists for LBC, while Nguyen had 18 digs. In addition to his 12 kills, McAllister also added eight blocks.

In LBC's second match, 14th ranked Baruch took it to the Chargers and defeated them in three sets. Brennen and Corbin each had seven kills for the Chargers, while Bahn added 18 assists.

Saturday, March 31:
SUNY New Paltz 3, Lancaster Bible 0
25-13, 25-23, 25-23

Johnson & Wales 3, Lancaster Bible 1
25-21, 20-25, 25-21, 25-21

Bahn had a team-high seven kills against SUNY New Paltz, but LBC had 20 errors to go with just 27 kills and lost in three sets. Longacre and Brennen added five kills each, while Keith Mitzel added three kills and three blocks.

In the final match of the Vassar College Invitational, the Chargers were able to take a set from Johnson & Wales, but could not maintain the momentum and lost two close sets to end the match. A.J. Longacre had a team-high 11 kills, while Corbin added 10 kills. Justin Perkins added five kills and 13 digs as well for the Chargers who fell to 8-16 this season.

LBC will close out the 2012 campaign on Tuesday when they host D'Youville at 6 p.m. Prior to the game, LBC will honor its 4-year seniors, McAllister and Corbin.
