Box Score The Lancaster Bible College men's soccer team opened its 2012 season with a 2-1 loss to Delaware Valley on Saturday in Doylestown, Pa., but with just three starters from last year's team starting on Saturday, there was a lot to be pleased with.
After the Aggies' Tyler Yankovich opened the scoring at the 18:48 mark, LBC's
Dwight Shelly tied the game with 5:34 remaining in the first half on a free kick from just outside the box. Oddly enough, Shelly's only other career goal came in LBC's 2010 season opener when they lost to Albright, 4-1.
Just 6:12 into the second half however, Yankovich scored his second goal of the game to put the Aggies back on top, 2-1. The Chargers would have a few other opportunities, but could not tie the game and lost their season opener for the fourth straight season.
"The guys played hard and I'm proud of their effort," Chargers' Head Coach
Tom Ardt said. "We controlled the midfield for most of the game and the two goals they scored came off of mistakes that we made."
With all of the new players, Ardt said he thought the team responded well, but needs to improve a few areas.
"I was pretty happy with our back four, but we need to be more aggressive on our attack," Ardt said. "The things we need to fix are things that are fixable in the next week."
LBC will have time to fix their mistakes as they do not play again until Friday, Sept. 7 when they will open NEAC play against Morrisville State. The game, to be played on Charger Field, will begin at 4 p.m.
Notes:
-The last time LBC won a season-opening game was in 2008 when they defeated Lesley, 1-0.
-LBC falls to 2-2 all-time against Delaware Valley.
