Box Score One of the biggest keys to Lancaster Bible's seven-game winning streak was its stingy defense. Over the seven games, the Chargers had allowed an average of 45.7 points per game and held two opponents below 40. LBC Head Coach Doug Helsel thought the defense was pretty good again on Monday, only it didn't matter because almost everything SUNYIT threw at the basket went in.
The Chargers ran into one of the hottest shooting teams in the North Eastern Athletic Conference on Monday as the host Wildcats defeated LBC, 88-81. Five SUNYIT players scored in double figures, led by Abbey Hanahan who had 18 points. Fellow guard Lyndsey Brognano added 16 points and five assists.
"I thought we played pretty well on the defensive end," Helsel said. "We had hands in their faces and everything, the shots just seemed to go in time and time again."
Though the Wildcats did miss occasionally, it wasn't very often. They shot 59.3% from the floor, including 5-of-10 from beyond the arc.
The Chargers led 46-41 at halftime but could not sustain the scoring pace in the second half. After LBC extended the lead to eight early in the second half, the Wildcats used a 15-2 run over a three-minute time span to not only erase the lead, but take a five-point lead of their own. The teams exchanged buckets for most of the second half, but
Sarah Heilenman's layup in transition cut the deficit to one, 82-81 with 33 seconds to play.
Doing what they did for much of the game, the Wildcats inbounded the ball and drove the court and Kayla McNeil hit a jumper with 25 seconds to play to put the Wildcats back up by three. LBC would not get any closer as the Wildcats used free throws to ice the game.
Chargers' senior had her second straight 20-point effort as she led all scorers with 24 points and added five assists. Freshman
Aubrey Folger had 21 points and 11 rebounds, while
Sarah Heilenman had 16 points.
Brooklyn Wilson had 15 points as well, going a perfect 7-of-7 from the free throw line.
LBC (12-3, 8-2 NEAC) is back in action on Wednesday night when they visit Penn St. Abington at 6 p.m. Links to both live stats and video of the game are on the schedule page.
