Chargers Halt Express

Box Score In a game that tested the patience and the will of the Lancaster Bible women's basketball team several times, the Chargers withstood a pesky Wells team and opened 2013 with a victory over the Express, 58-49.

Whether it be poor shooting or call that didn't go their way, it was a trying 40 minutes for the Chargers. LBC shot just 35 percent from the floor and connected on just one three-pointer the entire contest. Nevertheless, when the Chargers needed a stop down the stretch, they got it time-and-time again and held on for the win.

A bucket by Wells' Lindsay Achzet put the Express up, 49-45 with 5:19 to play. Enter Chargers' senior Emily Lloyd. Over the next 3:03, Lloyd would score all eight of the game's points and turn a four-point deficit into a four-point LBC lead. A combination of tough shots and willing herself to the basket propelled Lloyd to eight of her 12 points on for the day.

"Em went a little crazy there," Chargers' Head Coach Doug Helsel said. "She made some tough shots and really helped us. I would love if she did that a little earlier in the game, but we'll take it whenever she can provide it."

In addition to Lloyd's eight-point outburst, LBC's defense clamped down and held the Express without a point for the final 5:19.

"Down the stretch we did what we had to do defensively," Helsel said. "I think holding them to 49 is a great testament to our defensive play."

Helsel said he was also pleased with the team's ability to keep calm even when things weren't going their way.

"We didn't panic," Helsel said. "We have shown that all year that if we are down or shots aren't going in, we don't panic and we just keep at it. We missed a lot of open looks today, but the only thing to do is to keep getting the looks and keep working at it."

Chargers' freshman Aubrey Folger shined again, scoring a game-high 19 points and adding six rebounds and three steals. Lloyd finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds, her second straight double-double.

Wells' Ashley Roser had 15 points and 19 rebounds for the Express, but found herself in foul trouble late and eventually fouled out with 2:16 remaining.

The Chargers (7-2, 3-1 NEAC) return to the court on Monday when they host Keuka at 4 p.m. The Storm won the NEAC Championship last season and are off to a 5-1 start this season.

"They are the best team in the conference," Helsel said. "It will be a good measuring stick for where we are."
