Box Score A weekend of hopefulness turned to despair on Saturday as the Lancaster Bible men's soccer team was eliminated from North Eastern Athletic Conference playoff contention after getting crushed by Cazenovia, 5-2 in Cazenovia, N.Y.
The Wildcats scored all five of their goals in the first half and cruised to the easy three-goal victory. The five goals given up in the first half were the most given up in a half by the Chargers since Oct. 24, 2006 when they gave up five goals in the first half to McDaniel en route to an 8-0 loss to the Terror.
Sophomore
Bradley Wilcox and freshman
Matt Nargi scored for the Chargers who fell to 4-9-2 overall and 2-4-1 in NEAC play. LBC will wrap-up NEAC play next Sunday when they host SUNY Cobleskill at 3:30 p.m.
Cazenovia (4-9, 4-3 NEAC) opened the scoring just 13:55 into the game, but the Chargers came right back as Wilcox scored his third goal of the season at the 22:07 mark. The good feeling lasted just 30 seconds as the Wildcats went down the field and regained their two-goal lead at the 22:37 mark and did not stop there as they added two more goals less than six minutes later.Â
A penalty kick goal at the 38:30 mark made it 5-1 as the Chargers went into halftime realizing that only a monumental comeback would save their NEAC postseason lives. LBC had chances in the second half, but a missed PK and an offsides call on a would-be goal kept the score at 5-1. Nargi's late goal helped make the final score look nicer, but it was too late for the Chargers to secure their second-ever NEAC playoff berth.Â
While NEAC postseason play is not in the picture, the Chargers will turn their focus to the NCCAA East Region playoffs which begin on Thursday. With seeding yet to be determined due to a tie-breaker being figured out Saturday night, the Chargers must wait and see if they are the first, second or third seed. Should they be the first or second seed, they will host one of the two semifinals on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. If they are the one seed and win their semifinal game, they will host the East Region Final, next Saturday at a time to be determined.
