Chargers Hold Off Nittany Lions

Box Score The Lancaster Bible women's basketball team opened the 2013-14 campaign with a victory on Friday night as the Chargers downed Penn St. Fayette, 68-61 as the two teams faced off as part of the Eastern Mennonite Tip-Off Invitational.

The Chargers were led by junior Shanice Smith who had a game-high 26 points and 18 rebounds to lead the Chargers to their second straight season opening win. Sophomore Aubrey Folger, last season's NEAC Rookie of the Year, added 22 points and 16 rebounds for the Chargers who opened up a 36-19 lead at the half.

"It was the Shy and Aubrey show tonight," Chargers Head Coach Doug Helsel said. "I thought we dominated in the first half, but were a bit subpar in the second half as a team."

After leading by double digits for most of the game, the Chargers had to hold off a late run in the second half by the Nittany Lions. Lancaster Bible led by as much as 17 in the second half, but after the Chargers went cold from the floor, the Nittany Lions closed the deficit to four at 65-61 with 18 seconds to play, but would not get closer.

Lancaster Bible senior Brooklyn Wilson had 13 points to open up her final season with the Chargers, while junior Sarah Heilenman added four points and six rebounds.

Lancaster Bible will face tournament host Eastern Mennonite on Saturday in an early season battle between two teams who have high aspirations for the 2013-14 season. Helsel said the Chargers will be ready for the big, early-season matchup.

"We are excited for the opportunity to play EMU on Saturday and looking forward to playing a full 40 minutes," Helsel said.
