Box Score The 2013-14 home opener looked a lot like many of the 2012-13 home games for the Lancaster Bible men's basketball team. A good effort, a chance to win, but ultimately the game resulting in a very frustrating loss in which two or three miscues ended up costing the Chargers.Â
On Saturday, it was Eastern who took advantage of those miscues and played well enough when it mattered to secure a 68-59 victory at Horst Athletic Center, their first visit to Lancaster since the 1994-95 season.
Both teams got off to slow starts on Saturday as the Eagles led just 26-25 at halftime after the Chargers led for much of the first 20 minutes. In the second half though, the Eagles began to lay the groundwork for their victory as they continued to pound the glass and get multiple chances on the offensive end, while the Chargers were basically one-and-done when they were on offense.
Those multiple scoring chances eventually helped the Eagles build a somewhat comfortable lead as they made their free throws at the end and won by nine over the Chargers.
The Chargers (0-3) and the crowd were electrified by back-to-back dunks by
CJ Dunston and
Dondre Perry early in the first half, but Lancaster Bible could never create any distance between themselves and Eastern. The Chargers, whether simply losing a battle or getting a bad bounce, could never solve the rebounding issue and it wound up costing them.
"I thought the effort was good, but there were a few possessions in the second half where we took bad shots and then gave them several opportunities on the other end of the floor," Chargers Head Coach
Marshall Tague said. "We couldn't finish defensive possessions and that killed us today."
The final numbers weren't pretty as the Eagles outrebounded the Chargers, 46-20, including a decisive 21-2 edge on the offensive glass. Tague was happy with the Chargers in other areas however as the Chargers did a fairly good job combating the Eagles' full-court press which they applied nearly every single time they scored.
"I thought we did a good job with their press, but we could have been a bit more aggressive on the back end," Tague said. "Naheer played well today and hopefully he can build on that and I think when we needed something good, Albert was able to provide that for us."
Albert Suniga finished with 17 points for the Chargers, while
Jordan Mellinger added 10 points and three assists. Dunston finished with eight points, while Perry had seven points, two rebounds and two assists.Â
The Chargers will look to record their first win of the season on Tuesday when they host Penn St. Abington to open NEAC play. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. at Horst Athletic Center.
