Box Score The Lancaster Bible men's basketball team did something the program hadn't done since the 2005-06 season on Tuesday night as it won a regular season meeting at The Pit at Valley Forge Christian, 72-63. The win, the second in a row for the Chargers, is just the second in Phoenixville since '05-'06 with the other coming in the 2011 NCCAA East Region Final.
Albert Suniga led the Chargers with 19 points, six rebounds and five assists as he and
CJ Dunston (14 points, 14 rebounds), continue to pace the surging Chargers.Â
On Tuesday, Lancaster Bible trailed 27-17 with seven minutes remaining in the first half before rallying to take a 38-35 lead into halftime as the Chargers closed the half on a 21-8 run.
"I think that was the turning point tonight," Chargers Head Coach
Marshall Tague said. "We learned a lot about ourselves and didn't let the deficit balloon to 15 or 20 points, but rather, we dictated play and were able to go on a run."
Valley Forge Christian (5-2) took the lead back early in the second half and increased the lead to five points, 47-42 with 13:59 to play, but the Chargers (2-3, 1-0 NEAC) responded once again and used a 9-0 run over the next three minutes to take a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the way.
Suniga's jumper with 4:36 left gave Lancaster Bible their biggest lead of the game and the Chargers held off a late charge by the Patriots to win by nine.
It was a total team effort," Tague said. "I think we finally saw what our depth can do and I thought
Kurt Keltner played some huge minutes for us tonight, especially in the second half, and
Dave Long was a big factor again as well."
Tague also mentioned Suniga's controlled play and what it does for the Chargers.
"Albert played well again and he is just so consistent," Tague said. "I think our team feeds off of him and even though we didn't shoot that well tonight, we found a way to score."
Tague added that he thinks the team has found the right formula to be successful, but that the formula could always change.
"I think we know we need to rebound and play good defense to score to win games, but when our offense comes around, I think we're going to be a good team."
After starting the season 0-3, it would have been crazy to suggest that Lancaster Bible could be in a position to be above .500 before Finals Week, but with two big NEAC contests looming this weekend, two wins by the Chargers would get them to 4-3.
"I think our depth is part of the turnaround, but also guys getting healthy and guys bringing a great focus to everything we do as a team," Tague said. "Whether it's a shootaround, a film session, a practice or a game, the guys have begun to mentally think we are a good basketball team. The physical side has been there from the start, but we are finally getting there on the mental side."
Jordan Mellinger and
Dave Long each added 10 points for the Chargers on Tuesday night, while Keltner had three points, five rebounds and five assists.
The Chargers return to NEAC play on Friday as they host Cazenovia at 6 p.m. Lancaster Bible will then host reigning NEAC Champion Morrisville State on Saturday at 1 p.m.
