Box Score The Lancaster Bible men's basketball team continued its excellent play on Friday night as the Chargers hammered Cazenovia, 102-54 to improve to 2-0 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play and 3-3 overall. The win was Lancaster Bible's third straight and it marked the first time the Chargers scored over 100 points in regulation since the 2008-09 season when they defeated Washington Bible, 110-50.
The Chargers wasted little time taking it to the Wildcats (3-3, 1-2 NEAC) as they jumped out to a 67-29 halftime lead after shooting 62.2% [23-of-37] over the first 20 minutes. To put the 67 first-half points into perspective, the Chargers scored 67 points or fewer in 21 of the 26 games last season.
Three players,
Albert Suniga,
Naheer Mirza and
CJ Dunston scored in double figures in the first half as the Chargers led 30-15 midway through the first half. The Chargers hit six three-pointers in the first half and in a game filled with plenty of fouls, they were 15-of-19 from the line as well.
"I didn't think we'd score that much," Lancaster Bible Head Coach
Marshall Tague said. "It was the first time we'd seen zone all year long and I wasn't sure how we would react. But we prepared and broke things down over the past two days and I thought we did a good job moving the ball around to find the open guy."
Suniga finished with a game-high 15 points, while
Dondre Perry added 13 points. The Lancaster Bible starters and key bench players played very little in the second half and should be rested for the Chargers' showdown with Morrisville State on Saturday.Â
"It's huge we could get guys rest tonight," Tague said. "I think with Finals Week next week and the end of the semester, coupled with us playing three times this week has the guys pretty worn out, so I think it will be very beneficial that we got to rest some guys tonight."
Tague referenced the last time the Chargers played back-to-back games this season, which was the opening weekend of the season, and how the Chargers didn't play very well in either game, but especially defensively in the second game, which was a 95-80 loss to Manhattanville.
"Our bench is much deeper than it was that opening weekend and I think our depth is starting to show," Tague said. "Playing Morrisville State is a good test for us. They are the defending champs and we will have to beat teams like them down the road if we are going to win championships."
Several players saw unusually big minutes on Friday, such as freshman
Javon Cole who had four points, four rebounds and three assists. Fellow freshman
Jimmy Eagan two points and three boards, while
Brian Cunningham also had three rebounds. Junior
Corey Leonard saw his first action of the season as he is coming off an injury and produced five points and six rebounds.
Marquis Boone also had eight points and five boards for the Chargers who have won three straight games for the first time since the 2011-12 season.
The Chargers will host Morrisville State on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Mustangs defeated Penn St. Berks, 85-78 in overtime on Friday night.
