Chargers Secure Top Seed in NEAC Playoffs

Box Score The Lancaster Bible women's basketball team defeated Penn St. Berks, 67-52 on Friday night in Reading, Pa. and clinched the top spot in next week's North Eastern Athletic Conference playoffs. LBC's sixth straight win gives them their first NEAC South Division crown and because of their win over Keuka, the North Division winner, the Chargers will host the NEAC Final Four next weekend.

Chargers' freshman Aubrey Folger had a game-high 25 points on 10-of-15 shooting, while senior Lauren Heliger added 13 points nine rebounds as LBC won its 20th game of the season. The 20 wins are not only the most ever by an LBC basketball team, but with the win, the women's basketball team becomes the first team in LBC history to win 20 games in a single season.

"I thought we really got after them in the first half and played well," Chargers' Head Coach Doug Helsel said. "It's great to win the South Division as that was one of our main goals heading into this season."

Had LBC not defeated Penn St. Berks, it still would have won the division last night as second place, Penn St. Harrisburg was upset by Wilson, 77-75. The Phoenix had not won a NEAC game all season long until last night. Helsel was happy the Chargers could win though and keep the momentum and the team's winning streak alive.

"I'm glad we can keep the momentum going and hopefully extend that into the postseason after we wrap up the regular season on Saturday," Helsel said.

The Chargers final regular season game is at St. Elizabeth on Saturday. The game, scheduled to begin at 1 p.m., is especially important for the Screaming Eagles as they can wrap up the third and final playoff spot in the NEAC South Division with a victory over the Chargers. LBC defeated St. Elizabeth, 85-66 on January 16 in Lancaster.
