Chargers Record 2-2 Mark at York [N.Y.] Men's Volleyball Classic

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 The Lancaster Bible men's volleyball team split its first two matches of the ninth annual York [N.Y.] College Men's Volleyball  Classic on Friday in Jamaica, N.Y.

LBC lost to the host Cardinals in their opening match, 3-2. The teams traded sets back and forth (25-22, 21-25, 25-19, 20-25) before York took the fifth set, 15-12. Joey Brennen led the Chargers with 12 blocks, seven digs and four blocks, while Mitch Demko and A.J. Longacre added nine kills each. 

The Chargers hit just .105 in the match and matched nine service aces with nine service errors. The loss snapped LBC's three-match winning streak.

LBC rebounded quickly however as they took the court immediately after the loss and defeated NYU-Poly, 3-0. The Chargers swept the Fighting Blue Jays, 25-23, 25-23, 25-19, behind eight more kills from Brennen and Alex Bahn's four kills and 18 assists.

Corey Leonard, Miles Herron and Demko all added five kills each as the Chargers hit at a .284 clip. The victory moves LBC to 9-6 this season, topping their win total from the entire 2012 season when LBC finished 8-17.

"Mitch and Joey led us tonight offensively," Chargers' Head Coach Evelyn Long said. "I thought Alex, Andy [Nguyen] and Miles all played well defensively as well."

On Saturday, the Chargers opened play against Mount Olive and lost, 3-0. Mount Olive who went on to win the tournament, defeated the Chargers, 25-21, 30-28, 25-18. Herron led LBC with 10 kills, while Bahn had seven kills, five digs and 20 assists.

The Chargers (10-7) rebounded in their second match of the day when they defeated New Jersey City, 3-1. LBC defeated the Gothic Knights, 25-23, 22-25, 25-21, 25-16. Demko, Bahn and Herron each had 10 kills, while Bahn added seven digs, four blocks and 25 assists as well. Keith Mitzel added five kills and four digs for the Chargers.

Bahn earned a spot on the all-tournament team as he recorded 25 kills, 86 assists and 27 digs over the four matches.

The Chargers are back in action on Tuesday, March 19 when they will host Penn St. Altoona at 7 p.m. LBC will honor its seniors prior to the match.
