Box Score The Lancaster Bible men's volleyball team, looking to win its first-ever North Eastern Athletic Conference championship, fell just short on Saturday as Keuka literally blocked their way to a title. The Storm, using their tall and athletic middle blockers and outside hitters, seemingly blocked at everything at times as they defeated the Chargers, 3-1 to win the first NEAC Men's Volleyball title since 2007 when the sport was dropped due to lack of teams.
The teams battled back-and-forth for four sets as each team went through its own peaks and valleys. Down 24-22 in the opening set, the Chargers (16-16) rallied to win the set, 28-26, but the Storm quickly regained the momentum as they took the second set, 25-14.
The third set, probably the best of the day, featured each team at its absolute best. Keuka led early in the set, 6-1 and then 10-5, but the Chargers roared back and cut the deficit to one, 11-10 on a thunderous kill by
Alex Bahn. After a timeout by the Storm, Keuka won five of the next six points to take a 16-11 lead. The Chargers pulled themselves together after a timeout and after an error by Tom Campbell made it 18-15 Keuka, the Storm once again called timeout.
The set looked to be going Keuka's way once again when Manny Fernandez made it 21-17 with one of his 12 kills, but LBC held on and
Corey Leonard's second kill of the day tied the third set at 22-22. The teams split the next two points and LBC took their first lead of the set on an error by Keuka's Ryan Kelly. LBC couldn't close out the set however and three straight hitting errors by the Chargers gave the set to the Storm, 26-24.
Despite giving away the third set, the Chargers stormed out of the gate in the fourth set, taking a 6-0 on some great serving by Bahn. Keuka, as they had done all day, especially in their semifinal win against SUNYIT, did not go away and eventually tied the set a 11-11. After exchanging points back-and-forth, the Storm took a lead they would not relinquish when Fernandez connected once again for a kill and made the score 13-12.
Though LBC fought to the end, the Storm's ability to block and then create offense proved to be the difference as they won the fourth set, 25-20.
Connor Hinman, named Playoff MVP, finished with 18 kills, 20 digs and three blocks, while Manny Fernandez had 12 kills, eight digs and four blocks. Tom Campbell led everyone with 13 blocks and he added six kills.
For the Chargers,
Alex Bahn had his second triple-double of the season and just the third in LBC history, as he finished with 10 kills, 14 digs and 26 assists.
Joey Brennen chipped in with 14 kills and nine digs, wihle
Miles Herron had 12 kills, eight digs and 20 assists.
"We are obviously dissatisfied with the result of today's match, but we know we had a good season," Chargers' Head Coach Evelyn Long said. "Keuka played well and we didn't at times when we needed to. I think the experience of today's match will only help the guys going forward."
The Chargers finish the year at 16-16. The 16 wins are a program record and they did win the NEAC Regular Season title, going 5-0 in NEAC play during the regular season.
