Box Score The Lancaster Bible women's basketball team got the train back on the tracks on Saturday as the Chargers hammered Penn St. Berks, 71-45 in Reading, Pa. The win is the first for Lancaster Bible since they defeated Penn St. Harrisburg on December 13 and keeps the Chargers perfect in North Eastern Athletic Conference play as they moved to 4-0 this season.
Sophomore
Katy Stover scored 13 of her game-high 22 points in the first half as she was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the first half to help the Chargers build a 39-23 halftime lead. Both
Shanice Smith, 14 points and 12 rebounds, and
Aubrey Folger, 12 points and 14 rebounds, had a double-double for the Chargers who moved to 6-4 overall. The double-double was Folger's third straight and sixth this season.
The first 10 minutes of the game was back-and-forth as the score stood at 16-14 with 12:29 to play, but the Chargers began to take over as they finished the half on a 23-9 run on the legs of a great in-and-out game in which Folger and Smith would pound the ball inside and score easy buckets in the paint and big shots from the outside by Stover kept the scoring run going.
Lancaster Bible kept the momentum going in the second half as they played solid defense and increased their lead to as many as 31 points before winning by a margin of 26. Seniors
Emily Martz and
Brooklyn Wilson each had six points, while
Christy Lorah scored five points.
Each team had 27 turnovers in the game, but Lancaster Bible held a 23-10 advantage on the offensive glass and scored 20 second-chance points compared to just three for the Nittany Lions (0-9, 0-4 NEAC).
The Chargers are back in action on Monday night when they host Lancaster County neighbor, Elizabethtown at 7 p.m. The Blue Jays are 3-0 all-time against the Chargers and as of last week were the top vote getter outside the top-25 poll on d3hoops.com. The Chargers fell to the Blue Jays, 80-53 last season in Elizabethtown, Pa.
