Chargers Earn Victory Over Nittany Lions

Box Score If you were to describe every victory for the Lancaster Bible women's basketball team, Wednesday night's win over Penn St. Berks would definitely be the ugly duckling. It wasn't pretty and at times it was downright frustrating, but the Chargers kept their perfect North Eastern Athletic Conference record with a 71-53 victory at Horst Athletic Center.

Sophomore Aubrey Folger matched a season-high with 22 points to pace the Chargers as they defeated the Nittany Lions for the second time in 11 days. Senior Brooklyn Wilson played one of her better games of the season as she had 16 points and seven assists, while turning the ball over just one time.

Lancaster Bible Head Coach Doug Helsel credited Folger and Wilson with keeping the Chargers afloat while the rest of the offense struggled in the first half.

"Brooklyn was huge in the first half and we needed her," Helsel said. "I think Aubrey is sort of an unsung hero for us so far. She is so consistent offensively and has been guarding the other team's best player most nights and done a great job."

The first half featured scoring runs by both teams as well as long scoring droughts. Penn St. Berks took a surprising 15-6 lead in the first six minutes of the game before the Chargers answered with a 13-0 run to take a 19-15 lead. Berks responded by taking another small lead just before the half, but once again the Chargers came back and tied the game at 32-32 heading into the half.

"There is no excuse or explanation for how we played in the first half," Helsel said. "We challenged the ladies to play hard in the second half and they responded. This is only game two of four this week and we shouldn't be tired."

The game remained close for the first 10 minutes of the second half before the Chargers' defense clamped down and Folger took over. Berks tried to keep the game close, but if it wasn't Folger hitting her jumpers, Katy Stover stepped up and took the ball to the basket and Shanice Smith, who battled foul trouble all night, chipped in down low.

Stover finished with 14 points, while Smith had her seventh straight double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Meaghan Williams and Christy Lorah each had four points, while Lorah added six rebounds too.

The Chargers (9-5, 6-0 NEAC) return to the floor on Friday when they face Wilson in Chambersburg, Pa. at 6 p.m.
