Chargers Silence Screaming Eagles

Box Score Let's call it a good week.

The Lancaster Bible women's basketball aced its toughest schedule test to date as the Chargers defeated St. Elizabeth, 79-60 on Saturday to complete a perfect 4-0 week in which they played four times in six days. Sophomore Aubrey Folger had a career-high 31 points and added 10 rebounds to lead the Chargers to their 16th straight NEAC victory dating back to last season.

The Screaming Eagles, riding an eight-game winning streak entering Saturday, gave the Chargers all they could handle for 30 minutes, but Lancaster Bible pulled away late and won their fifth straight game. The Chargers led by just two, 35-33, at halftime as the Screaming Eagles closed the half on an 11-2 run.

The game remained close for much of the second half as St. Elizabeth's Cheyenne Grant hit a three-pointer with 7:59 to play to cut the Chargers' lead to 56-51. That is as close as St. Elizabeth would make it however as the Chargers scored on their next eight possessions highlighted by Shanice Smith's jumper in the paint with 3:45 to play that made it 70-55.

"Teams have had to leave someone open against us and today we were very opportunistic," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Doug Helsel said. "St. Elizabeth would cover Shy and Aubrey, and Brooklyn would score. Then they would Shy and Brooklyn and Aubrey score. We did a really good job moving the ball today as evidenced by our 22 assists on 28 field goals."

Wilson finished with 18 points and seven assists for the Chargers, while Smith had 16 points and 18 boards. Sophomore Katy Stover, who the Screaming Eagles covered well for most of the game, contributed in other ways as she had a season-high seven assists to go along with her 10 points.

"St. Elizabeth is a good team," Helsel said. "They did a nice job on Katy today, but Katy found other ways which is great to see as we go forward."

Helsel also complimented the Screaming Eagles offense.

"They can score and usually they score three at a time, which is tough to play against," Helsel said. "They controlled the last four minutes or so of the first half and we challenged the ladies to play a full 20 minutes in the second half and we were able to do that."

Lancaster Bible (11-5, 8-0 NEAC) faces another tough test on Tuesday when they travel to the nation's capital to face Gallaudet who is currently in second place in the NEAC South Division.

"Tuesday is another big one," Helsel said. "We have some tougher games coming up and Tuesday will be one we have to be ready for."

The Chargers have not lost a NEAC game since January 21, 2013 when they lost at SUNYIT, 88-81. Equally impressive, Lancaster Bible has not lost a NEAC game at home since February 16, 2012, a stretch of 15 straight games.
