Lancaster Bible Outlasts SUNY Cobleskill

Box Score At this point in the season, none of a team's wins need to be pretty. They just need to be wins.

Lancaster Bible took that sentiment to heart on Friday night as they defeated SUNY Cobleskill, 58-52 to maintain their lead in the North Eastern Athletic Conference standings. Sophomore CJ Dunston had 14 points and 12 rebounds to pace the Chargers as they improved to 10-6 overall and 8-1 in NEAC play.

The Chargers trailed 27-23 at half and didn't create separation from the Fighting Tigers until midway through the second half when a three-pointer by Jordan Mellinger made it 41-34 with 10:14 to play. Cobleskill (3-12, 2-7 NEAC) kept the game close for the entire 40 minutes and looked to have a chance to tie the game on the final possession before Lancaster Bible's Trevor Marsh made the play of the game with 19 seconds to go.

After Naheer Mirza made the first of his two free throws to give Lancaster Bible a 55-52 lead, he missed the second, but Marsh flew in from the block and grabbed the offensive rebound. He was fouled and made both of his free throws to give the Chargers a 57-52 lead.

"That's the second time he's done that this season," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Marshall Tague said. "He did it up at Wells too, just a couple of weeks ago. Those types of plays win games."

In addition to Marsh's solid play and Mellinger's 12 points, Tague credited Kurt Keltner and Cory Leonard with coming off the bench and providing good minutes.

"I know I've said it before, but our depth has been great," Tague said. "We can turn to a lot of guys on the bench and when we need a spark, we can get it from a lot of guys. We knew Cobleskill's record was not indicative of how they play and we needed everyone tonight."

For the second straight game, the Chargers didn't score 60 points, but unlike their 73-59 loss to Gallaudet on Tuesday, Tague said the team's defensive play was up to par and allowed the Chargers to have another off night.

"Scoring under 60 points doesn't matter to me if we win," Tague joked. "But tonight, the difference was we showed guts and grit on the defensive end and got the job done. That wasn't the case on Tuesday at Gallaudet."

Junior Albert Suniga added nine points and seven assists for Lancaster Bible, while Mirza had eight points and three assists.

The Chargers will face one of their toughest tests to date on Saturday when they host SUNYIT (11-5, 6-3 NEAC) at 1 p.m. The Wildcats defeated Penn St. Berks, 109-93 on Friday night in Reading, Pa.
