Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Zach Freeman

Chargers Win in Overtime

After being frustrated for over 90 minutes, the Lancaster Bible women's soccer team finally got the goal they worked hard for all day as freshman Emily Beltran headed home the game-winning goal with 59 seconds remaining in the first overtime to give the Chargers a 1-0 victory over Penn College on Saturday at Charger Field. The victory was the 75th of Lancaster Bible Head Coach Ken Craul's collegiate coaching career.

The Chargers (9-4, 6-2 NEAC) controlled play all game long as they outshot the Wildcats (4-10, 3-6 NEAC), 27-5 and held a 7-3 edge in corner kicks. Penn College had more shots in overtime (three) than they did during regulation (two). Lancaster Bible held a 21-2 edge in shots during regulation, including 13-0 in the first half.

All of that couldn't lead to a goal however as the Wildcats' defense and goalkeeper Colleen Bowes would not let the Chargers find the back of the net.Ā

In the overtime period, both teams traded great chances before Beltran ended the game off a cross from sophomore Alyssa Wesner. Wesner collected the ball in the box off of a broken play and found Beltran in the middle of the box as Beltran's header went off of the right post and into the net at the 99:01 mark. The goal was Beltran's team-leading 11th of the season.Ā

Lancaster Bible Head Coach Ken Craul was happy with the way his team played, but would've liked to have seen the Chargers take more advantage of their chances.

"There needs to be an understanding that if something isn't working, we need to adjust and try something else," Craul said. "That being said, I thought we played well and the effort was there, we just need to convert our chances a bit better."

As the season enters its final stretch, and the Chargers continue to battle through injuries, Craul continues to preach a total team effort to his group.

"Every position has a responsibility that goes along with it and no matter who we put in that position, that person's job is to fulfill that responsibility," Craul said. "I think if we keep buying in, then we will be successful."

Lancaster Bible is off until next Friday when they host SUNY Cobleskill at 2 p.m.

Notes:
-Craul's record at Lancaster Bible now stands at 75-41-3 for a winning percentage of .643.
