Last season, the Lancaster Bible men's soccer team took a regular season-ending trip to upstate New York with their playoff chances on life support and came away with two of the ugliest losses of the season en route to missing the playoffs. The Chargers proved on Friday that this regular season-ending trip will be much different. Lancaster Bible scored three times in the first half en route to a 5-1 defeat of Wells in Aurora, N.Y.Â
The win improves the Chargers to 10-5-1 overall this season and 6-2-1 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play. It is the first time since the 2011 season the Chargers have won 10 or more games.Â
Freshman
Ivan Correa opened the scoring at 17:24 as he took a pass from
Edward Bills and scored to the left side of the net. Correa scored again less than seven minutes later as he blasted in a goal from long range and caught the Wells goalkeeper off guard. Just over two minutes later, senior
Zac Bonomo scored his first collegiate goal as he tapped in a rebound and gave the Chargers a commanding 3-0 lead.
Lancaster Bible outshot Wells, 14-6 in the opening 45 minutes as they stunned the home team.
Not going down without a fight, the Express scored seven minutes into the second half and cut the deficit to 3-1. The scored stayed the same until the 68:35 mark when freshman
Alex Stoneback scored his first collegiate goal on a blast from outside the box and all but ended Wells' chances of coming back. Bills added a penalty kick with 7:54 to play to increase the Lancaster Bible lead to four as they became the first team to score five goals against Wells in Aurora since September 1, 2009.
"We had some really nice strikes on the ball today that resulted in some really nice goals," Lancaster Bible Head Coach
Tom Ardt said. "We produced great combinations from dangerous spots on the field which is what we have worked on a lot in practice lately."
Ardt credited the Express for their play in the second half as the Chargers had to battle, despite leading by multiple goals the entire second half.Â
"Give wells credit, they played hard the whole game and really came out well in the second half," Ardt said. "There are still some things we need to fix defensively, but I thought we played very well today."
Goalkeeper
Andrew Kofstad made four saves for his eighth win of the season. The Chargers finished the game with a 25-14 advantage in shots, but the Express held the corner kick edge with seven compared to Lancaster Bible's three.
The Chargers will wrap-up the regular season on Saturday at Keuka. Lancaster Bible currently sits in third place, but should they defeat Keuka, they will jump to second place. A loss, combined with a Wells victory over Penn St. Berks will push the Chargers back to fourth place and they will have to host a North Eastern Athletic Conference Quarterfinal on November 5. Should the Chargers lose to Keuka and Wells loses or ties Penn St. Berks, Lancaster Bible will remain in third place and not have to play until the NEAC Semifinals on Saturday, November 8.
Saturday's game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
