The Lancaster Bible women's soccer team made its first-ever trip to Houghton, N.Y. on Saturday as the Chargers took on the Highlanders on Homecoming. After trailing just 1-0 at halftime, the Chargers fell victim to the powerful Houghton offense in the second half and lost, 6-0.Â
The Highlanders (5-5) opened the scoring just 3:45 into the game as Sarah Gabriele scored her third goal of the season. The score remained that way through halftime despite the Highlanders holding a 12-4 edge in shots. The second half was a different story however as Houghton scored early and often.Â
Alexis Lamb made it 2-0 just 50 seconds into the second frame and Darlene Eckhardt and Gabriele scored six and eight minutes later to make it 4-0 and the rout was on. The Chargers, playing without two of their top defensemen, could not stay organized in their own end and it wound up costing them.
"A couple of injuries hurt our ability to stay organized on the defensive side of things, but make no mistake, Houghton is a good team," Lancaster Bible Head Coach
Ken Craul said. "Houghton is quick and has a lot of depth."
Nikki Garns and Stephany Ellison scored two more late goals for Houghton as the Highlanders poured it on. The Chargers were outshot, 18-1 in the second half and 30-5 for the game.
Junior goalkeeper
Kaitlyn Scheuing made 10 saves for Lancaster Bible who dropped to 7-4.Â
Coupled with its loss on Tuesday to Penn St. Abington, this is the first time Lancaster Bible has lost two straight games since last October 10 and 15 when they fell to Penn St. Abington and Penn St. Harrisburg on back-to-back dates.Â
The Chargers will look to snap their losing streak on Sunday when they face St. Elizabeth for a rare Sunday afternoon game that is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. in Morristown, N.J.
