After enjoying the luxury of having a week off in the middle of the season, the Lancaster Bible men's soccer team got back to work in a big way on Wednesday as they raced past Rosemont, 4-2 at Charger Field. The victory improves the Chargers 7-4-1 this season and this is the latest the team has been above the .500 mark since the 2010 season when Lancaster Bible went 12-10.Â
Junior Nate Grimley opened the scoring just 3:42 into the game on Wednesday as he collected a rebound scored off of the right post. The goal was Grimley's first of the season and just the second of his collegiate career. Lancaster Bible continued to control the game as the first half progressed and freshman
Ivan Correa made it 2-0 after he stole the ball near midfield and sprinted down the field, past the Raven defense, and scored into the right-hand side of the net.
Ethan Toomey made it 3-0 Lancaster Bible with 1:40 remaining in the first half as he collected a rebound and scored off of a Rosemont defender. The goal was Toomey's second of his career and came nearly two years to the day when he scored his first career goal as he hadn't scored since October 9, 2012 when the Chargers defeated Valley Forge Christian, 8-1 in Phoenixville, Pa.Â
"It was nice to see Toomey and Grimley score as they more often than not are our defensive midfielders," Lancaster Bible Head Coach
Tom Ardt said. "They were aggressive though and that is positive and I'm happy to see their aggressiveness pay off as those were big goals for us."
Rosemont leading scorer Luke McIlvaine converted a penalty kick early in the second half to make a 3-1 game, but Correa's second goal of the game at the 59:04 mark not only put the game away, but was one of the prettiest goals the Chargers have scored all season. Off a free kick from 22 yards out, senior
Darrell Goff found Correa in the box and Correa collected the ball in the air, spun and found the back of the net with his shot from 15 yards away.
McIlvaine added his second of the game with 45 seconds remaining to create 4-2 final score, but it was too little, too late as the Chargers improved to 2-2 all-time against the Ravens.
"We beat a good team today," Ardt said. "We were able to get healthy over the past week and had some really good practices. I thought
Ben Noel did a great job stepping into the center-back defensive role today as he had never played there."
Lancaster Bible outshot the Ravens, 28-14, while each team had five corner kicks.
Wednesday marked Lancaster Bible's final non-conference game of the season as the Chargers will conclude the regular season with five straight North Eastern Athletic Conference contests. That stretch will begin on Saturday when the Chargers welcome Penn College to Charger Field for the first time ever. The Wildcats, along with Bryn Athyn, are the newest members of the NEAC and are 5-7-1 overall this season and 2-4-1 in NEAC play.
"Saturday is a big game for us," Ardt said. "We know they can play and they have shown they can go toe-to-toe with the best in the conference. I think today provides us some momentum going forward as we have started this homestand off with a win. We hope to build on it and play well over the next two weekends."
Saturday's game is slated to begin at 3:15 p.m.
