Chargers Clinch Top Spot in NEAC

Box Score Worst to first.

The 2012-13 Lancaster Bible men's basketball team resided in the basement of the North Eastern Athletic Conference standings during the entire season. The 2013-14 team has been living in the penthouse for the past few weeks and on Tuesday, they earned the right to send out invitations to their party which they will host on March 1-2. That party would be the NEAC Final Four, as Lancaster Bible clinched the top spot in the conference with a 72-71 victory at Penn St. Abington on Tuesday evening.

Trailing 38-27 at halftime and 42-31 with 17:43 to play, the Chargers used a 20-7 run over the next seven minutes to take a two-point lead at 51-49. No team had a lead greater than three points over the next seven minutes until Lancaster Bible's CJ Dunston completed a three-point play the old fashioned way to give his team a 68-64 lead with 3:51 to play. After two made free throws from the Nittany Lions, Dunston restored the four-point advantage with a layup to make it 70-66 with 2:37 to play.

Abington's Max Alton hit a 3-pointer 19 seconds later to make it 70-69 Chargers with 2:18 to play, but Dunston had one more play to make and he did with 1:01 to play. After Jordan Mellinger stole the ball with 1:12 to play, he missed a layup, but Dunston was there to throw down the rebound as his dunk made it 72-69.

Alex Agyedu's layup with 47 seconds to play cut the Nittany Lions' deficit to one, 72-71, but neither team would score again. The Chargers turned the ball over with 13 seconds to play, but as Alton received the ball with two seconds to play, he stepped on the sideline and was called for being out-of-bounds. Abington fouled Naheer Mirza with 1.1 seconds left and though Mirza missed the foul shot, the Nittany Lions desperate heave as time expired did not come close to the basket.

"We haven't had a game like this in two years," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Marshall Tague said. "We weren't playing very well, down 11 points, ball just not bouncing our way, yet we found a way to win. The guys were unbelievable, especially CJ and Albert. You could see it in their eyes tonight, they just wanted it more than everyone else."

Dunston finished with a game-high 22 points and added seven rebounds, while Suniga had 15 points and five boards.

"Those two guys led us tonight. They played with guts, there is no other way to put it," Tague said. "Dre played hard too and his dunk in the first half was unreal."

Dre of course is Dondre Perry who had 13 points, while Naheer Mirza was the fourth and final Lancaster Bible player in double figures with 10 points.

The Chargers (16-7, 14-2 NEAC) struggled in the first half as they shot just 37.9 percent (11-of-29).

"We were making it so difficult on ourselves defensively because of how bad we were on the offensive end," Tague said. "But as bad as the first half was, we were just as good in the second half. The guys responded and executed in the second half."

Tague, and his dad, assistant coach Dave Tague, both pointed to the Chargers getting out and running in the second half.

"I think getting them in transition was big for us," Tague said. "We thought if we could do that, we could score some points and it worked."

Penn St. Abington (13-10, 10-6 NEAC) was led by Mike Marvin who had 20 points and 10 rebounds in his final home game wearing a Nittany Lions uniform.

The Chargers will wrap-up the regular season this weekend in New York as they face SUNYIT on Friday at 5 p.m. and SUNY Cobleskill on Saturday at 1 p.m.
