Box Score It took overtime, but Lancaster Bible earned the split they needed on its weekend trip to New York as they downed Cazenovia, 90-87 in Cazenovia, N.Y. Junior
Albert Suniga had a career-high 30 points as he and the Chargers moved to 10-2 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play and 12-7 overall.Â
Lancaster Bible trailed by three, 40-37 at halftime, but overcame that deficit early in the second half and led for much of half as well. Despite taking leads of six and seven, the Chargers could not put the Wildcats away and Cazenovia finally tied the game at 82-82 on a three-pointer by Malik Adair-Mountain with 1:02 to play. Each team had a chance to take the lead in the final minute, but both missed their opportunity.
In the overtime period the Chargers continued their mastery of shooting free throws as they earned their first four points from the charity stripe thanks to Suniga. A jumper by
Jordan Mellinger made it 88-82 with 3:10 to play, but a three-point play by Ryan Gavin with 2:25 to play cut it to 88-85.
Sophomore
CJ Dunston, who had his second consecutive strong game, was fouled on the Chargers' next possession and sank his two free throws as well to make it 90-85. Gavin scored a minute later to make it 90-87 and Lancaster Bible finally missed a pair of free throws as Dunston missed twice with 18 seconds to play. The Wildcats (5-15, 3-10 NEAC) set up their final play, but Keith Caiello's three-pointer wouldn't go with three seconds to play and the Chargers had their weekend split.
"We'll take wins, especially road wins, any way we can get them at this point," Lancaster Bible Head Coach
Marshall Tague said. "Albert was great from the free throw line, CJ made some big plays on the offensive glass and Dondre really stepped up his game as he was very aggressive early on."
The Chargers finished 25-of-29 from the free throw line, led by Suniga who was a perfect 15-of-15 from the line. Dunston added 18 points and 11 rebounds, while
Dondre Perry had 16 points. Mellinger also had seven points and six boards for the Chargers who swept the season series from the Wildcats.
The weekend split means the Chargers still control their own destiny to the top seed in the conference. Lancaster Bible leads Morrisville State by a 1/2 game. The Chargers have six NEAC games remaining, while the Mustangs have five left. Should the Chargers win the rest of their games, they will be the top seed and host the NEAC Final Four during the first weekend of March. Should they move into a tie with Morrisville State, the top seed will be decided by tie-breakers as the Chargers and Mustangs split their season series.
For now, Lancaster Bible will focus on its next opponent, Gallaudet. The Bison defeated the Chargers just 10 days go, handing Lancaster Bible one of its two NEAC losses. Wednesday's tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
