Chargers Cap Season with Fifth Place Finish at NCCAA National Tournament

Box Score The Lancaster Bible women's basketball team won its second straight game as they defeated Ohio Christian, 67-62 and earned a fifth place finish at the NCCAA Division II National Tournament in Joplin, Mo. After dropping their opening game of the tournament to Arlington Baptist, the Chargers fought back and won their final two games to end their season on a winning streak.

Junior Shanice Smith had a team-high 21 points and added 11 rebounds, while sophomore Aubrey Folger had 20 points and 15 rebounds. Folger averaged 21.3 points and 12.3 rebounds over the three games at the national tournament and earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team.

"It was just a really good win today," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Doug Helsel said. "Ohio was quick, but we controlled the tempo of the game much better than we did the other day."

Senior Brooklyn Wilson finished with six points, two rebounds and two assists in her final collegiate game. Wilson, who holds the program record for games played in a career with 114, finished 15 points shy of 1,000. In Friday's game, with the Chargers ahead comfortably, the coaches gave Wilson a few extra minutes to try and get a few more points as she got closer to 1,000.

"We had her in there to take a few more shots and as she is driving to the basket, she sees Shanice is open and dishes it right to her," Helsel said. "Instead of forcing a shot to get herself two more points, she finds an open teammate. It is a perfect snapshot of what kind of person Brooklyn is and what she has meant to this program."

Helsel reflected on both Wilson and fellow senior Emily Martz after the game.

"It's a bittersweet day for us as we say goodbye to Brooklyn and Martzy," Helsel said. "They have meant a ton to this program and were a big part of the turnaround here. We appreciate everything they have done here as we go on in our quest for excellence. I'm happy the two of them could end their careers with a win."

Junior Sarah Heilenman, who missed a large part of the season with an injury, added 11 points, six rebounds and four assists as she played very well down the stretch for the Chargers.

Lancaster Bible ends the year with a record of 23-7. Combined with last year's 24-5 mark, the Chargers are 47-12 over the past two seasons. Folger finishes the season with 532 points and becomes the first women's basketball player in Lancaster Bible history with more than 500 points in a season. Her 17.7 points per game are the most since Kathryn Caldwell averaged 19.8 during the 1995-96 season. Folger currently has 995 points which is the most in two seasons for any Lancaster Bible women's basketball player in history.
