Box Score Lancaster Bible let a chance to win its second straight North Eastern Athletic Conference championship slip through its fingers on Sunday as Wells overcame an early 16-point deficit to defeat the Chargers, 67-60 and claim its first-ever NEAC crown.
The loss snaps the Chargers' 15-game winning streak and instead of returning to the NCAA Division III Tournament, Lancaster Bible will head to Joplin, Missouri for the NCCAA Division II National Tournament. In the early going, it looked as if the Chargers were going to run away with the championship as they jumped out to a 20-4 lead with 12:35 to play in the first half.
Wells hung around however and a jumper by Kristen Ryan with 6:22 to play in the first half cut the Chargers' lead to 25-16. Lancaster Bible increased its lead to double digits again at 32-22 with 2:58 to play, but the Express (20-7) ended the half on a 9-4 run and headed into the locker trailing, 36-31.
Lancaster Bible sophomore
Aubrey Folger was dominant in the first half as she was 6-of-9 from the floor en route to 13 points.
The game stayed close throughout the second half as neither team held a lead larger than seven. The Chargers were able to hold the Express off for the first 4:35 of the second half before Wells finally took their first lead at 41-40. It was quickly erased as Folger's layup gave the Chargers a 42-41 lead with 14:47 to play. Lancaster Bible kept the lead and increased it to five at 50-45 on a 3-pointer by
Katy Stover with 8:56 to play.
A 6-0 run by the Express over the next 1:17 gave Wells the lead back at 51-50 and though the Chargers regained the lead less than a minute later, Wells used another 5-0 run to take a 56-52 lead with 4:43 to play. Stover's layup with 2:55 to play cut the deficit to two at 58-56, but the Express were relentless and increased the lead to six at 62-56 on a layup by Cassie Smythe with 1:58 left in the game.
The Chargers cut the deficit to four two more times, but would not get closer as Lindsay Achzet hit one-of-two free throws with 24 seconds left to make it 67-60 and effectively end the game.
The loss snaps Lancaster Bible's streak of 26 straight NEAC wins including last season's playoffs. The Chargers last NEAC loss came to SUNYIT on January 21, 2013 in Utica, N.Y.
Folger finished with a game-high 24 points and added eight rebounds and three assists, while Stover had 19 points and five boards. Junior
Sarah Heilenman chipped in with 10 points, six boards and four assists.
"We just ran out of gas," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Doug Helsel said. "Credit to Wells, they played well and did what they had to do to win."
Ashley Roser, who was named Playoff MVP, led the Express with 21 points and 13 rebounds. The Express will find out their NCAA Division III First Round opponent on Monday.
The Chargers (21-6) will head to the NCCAA Division II National Tournament for the first time since the 2002-03 season. The only NCCAA team the Chargers played this season was Valley Forge Christian who they beat, 71-21 on January 20. Lancaster Bible is ranked sixth in the most recent NCAA Division II poll.
"I'm excited to go and find out where we are nationally with the other Christian schools in the NCCAA," Helsel said.
Lancaster Bible will find out in the coming days who it will play in the tournament.
