Promise of 2014 Shown at Crosstown Crossover

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 The Lancaster Bible women's volleyball team opened its season with the Crosstown Crossover for the third straight season. The crossover consists of Lancaster County teams Elizabethtown, Franklin & Marshall and Lancaster Bible as well as Berks County neighbor Penn St. Berks. Below are the recaps of each match:

Franklin & Marshall at Lancaster Bible:
The Lancaster Bible women's volleyball team dropped its season opener on Friday night to Franklin & Marshall, 3-0 at Horst Athletic Center. The Chargers lost to the Diplomats, 25-20, 25-13, 25-19 in the opening match of the Crosstown Crossover. Penn St. Berks hosted Elizabethtown in the other opening match of the crossover and all four teams will play on Saturday at Elizabethtown.

Friday's opening set turned out to be the best for the Chargers as they kept the set close before the Dips pulled away late. F & M used the momentum from the first set to take a quick 7-1 lead in the second set and cruised to an easy 25-13 win. The third set went back-and-forth for the first 20 points, but F & M used a three-point run to open up a 15-11 lead. The Chargers eventually cut the deficit to 16-15, but another four-point run by the Dips ended any chance for the Chargers.

"I thought we put forth a good effort tonight," Chargers Head Coach Lauren Bewley said. "Playing a team this good reveals what we need to keep working on, but I thought defensively we played pretty well."

Senior Katie Coomber led the Chargers with six kills and 18 digs, while junior Hannah Derr added five kills, 14 assists and 14 digs. Fellow junior Grace Scheuerman added 17 digs as well, while freshman Myranda Kemrer had five kills and 12 digs in her first collegiate match.

The Diplomats were led by Kelsey Michenko's eight kills, while Caroline Hubbard had 29 assists and 12 digs.

Penn St. Berks vs. Lancaster Bible (@Elizabethtown):
After losing to the Nittany Lions three times in straight sets in 2013, the Chargers actually held a 2-1 lead on Penn St. Berks on Saturday, but couldn't hold on as the Nittany Lions roared back for a 3-2 five-set victory. The Chargers won the opening set, 25-19 and dropped set two, 25-18. Lancaster Bible responded by once again winning 25-19 in the third set, but the Nittany Lions took a close fourth set, 25-21 and cruised to a 15-8 victory in the fifth and final set.

Senior Katie Coomber finished with a team-high 16 kills for the Chargers, while freshman Myranda Kemrer had seven kills and a team-high 19 digs. Junior Grace Scheuerman added 18 digs, while senior Amanda Maltzahn had seven kills and five blocks for Lancaster Bible.

The Chargers have now lost seven straight matches to the Nittany Lions and have not defeated Penn St. Berks since 2009.

Lancaster Bible at Elizabethtown:
After a short break, the Chargers took the court again, this time against the host Elizabethtown. Lancaster Bible had been swept both times over the past two seasons by the Blue Jays, but came out and took the opening set, 25-23 from the hosts. It turned out to be the bright spot of the match as the Blue Jays took the next three sets, 25-15, 25-20, 25-10.

Kemrer led the way with nine kills and 19 digs, while Hannah Derr added 19 assists and 13 digs. Coomber also had six kills and 16 digs.

The Chargers will host a tri-match on Wednesday as they welcome Delaware Valley and Shenandoah to Horst Athletic Center. Lancaster Bible will take on the Aggies at 4 p.m. and Shenandoah at 8 p.m. Delaware Valley and Shenandoah will play one another at 6 p.m.
