The Lancaster Bible men's soccer team continued its run of strong play on Wednesday as they shutout rival Cairn, 2-0 in Langhorne, Pa.Â
Lancaster Bible dominated the game from the start as they outshot the Highlanders, 17-3 in the opening half. The Chargers were rewarded for their efforts at the 20:57 mark when freshman
Ivan Correa scored his fourth goal of the season off a pass from senior
Darrell Goff.Â
The score remained 1-0 through halftime due in part to Cairn goalkeeper Caleb Pancoast who saved a penalty kick off the foot of Lancaster Bible's
Josiah Groff. The Chargers finally got their insurance goal at the 69:09 mark when freshman
Edward Bills scored his third goal of the year off of a feed from Enoc Navarette.Â
Lancaster Bible outshot the Highlanders, 27-9 for the game and held an 11-4 edge in corner kicks.
"I thought we dominated most aspects of the game and I was pleased with our effort today," Lancaster Bible Head Coach
Tom Ardt said. "It was a physical game, like always with Cairn, but our guys played hard and battled the entire 90 minutes."
The Chargers (5-3) have a week off until their next game when they travel to Chester, Pa. to take on Widener at 7 p.m. Ardt said the week will help with the overall health of the team and allow them to work on a few things.
"We need to be a little more composed and creative in our finishing," Ardt said. "It isn't so much the final shot, but the touch or pass prior to the shot. I think we need to be just a little more creative with our efforts."
Ardt was also pleased with two of the Chargers' seniors, Navarette and Goff.
"Enoc was solid in the midfield and really played his position well today," Ardt said. "Darrell played the most minutes of any game this season and did a lot of different things for us."
Lancaster Bible's win on Wednesday was its first since the 2009 NCCAA East Region Final when the Chargers won, 1-0. The Chargers advanced to the NCCAA National Tournament by defeating Philadelphia Biblical / Cairn in 2011, but the game was decided in penalty kicks and thus goes down as a tie. Wednesday also marks the first regular season win over Philadelphia Biblical / Cairn since 2008 when the Chargers defeated then-PBU, 2-1 in Langhorne, Pa.
Notes:-Cairn still leads the all-time series between these two teams, 41-12-6.
-Wednesday marked the first of three straight non-conference games for the Chargers. Lancaster Bible will take on Widener on Sept. 24 and Baptist Bible on Sept. 27 before returning to North Eastern Athletic Conference play on Sept. 30 at Penn St. Abington.
