The Lancaster Bible men's soccer team finally got a goal when they needed it as freshman
Spencer Lockard headed in a cross from junior
Josiah Groff on a Chargers' corner kick with just under two minutes to play to help Lancaster Bible to a 1-1 tie at Penn St. Abington on Tuesday night.
The game was scoreless through halftime before Penn St. Abington took a 1-0 lead in the 66th minute thanks to a goal from Alex Martins. The score remained 1-0 as the clock ticked down and it appeared as if Lancaster Bible was headed for their third one-goal loss of the year.Â
Lockard and Goff had other ideas as they teamed up for a beautiful set piece that saw Lockard elevate over the defense and head the ball into the net, tying the game at 1-1 with 1:48 to play. The goal was Lockard's third of the season, while it was Groff's team-leading sixth assist.
"We had a lot of control in the second half and we took a risk there at the end bringing another guy forward, but it paid off for us and Spencer was able to tie the game," Lancaster Bible Head Coach
Tom Ardt said.Â
A feisty extra 20 minutes that saw a total of three yellow cards handed out, could not produce a winner and for the first time this season, Lancaster Bible had itself a tie. The Chargers held a 13-9 lead in shots, while the Nittany Lions had an 8-5 edge in corner kicks.
"This was definitely a heavyweight boxing match," Ardt said. "They attacked hard and fast to begin the game, but we withstood their pressure and settled in and then in the second half it was us who controlled play and got some good chances."
In addition to Lancaster Bible's second half performance, Ardt was also happy with the team's play in overtime.
"We were knocking on the door in overtime, we just couldn't find that final pass," Ardt said. "But the guys played hard the entire time and I'm very pleased with the effort."
The Chargers are now 6-4-1 overall and 3-1-1 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play. Lancaster Bible has a week off now as they will look to get healthy before they host Rosemont on Wednesday, October 8 at 4 p.m. The game against the Ravens begins a four-game homestand for the Chargers as they will host NEAC opponents Penn College, SUNY Cobleskill and SUNYIT following the October 8th contest.
Notes:-Penn St. Abington had won the previous two meetings in the series as they won 4-1 in 2012 and 2-1 last season.Â
