The Lancaster Bible women's soccer team had its chances on Tuesday night to pull off a road victory at rival Penn St. Abington, but the Chargers couldn't convert and 1:11 into the second overtime the Nittany Lions made them pay as Ashley Quenzer scored off a set piece and gave the home team the victory.
The Chargers (7-3, 4-2 NEAC) controlled play the entire first half as they outshot Penn St. Abington, 14-3 and had several good chances to score.
"We had two great looks in the first half, we just couldn't convert," Lancaster Bible Head Coach
Ken Craul said.Â
It was the complete opposite in the second half as the Nittany Lions (8-3, 7-1 NEAC) dominated play and outshot the Chargers, 16-6. Junior goalkeeper
Kaitlyn Scheuing kept the Chargers in the game and made five of her six total saves in the second frame.
After 10 scoreless minutes of overtime, the teams switched ends and early in the second overtime, the Nittany Lions earned a corner kick. Quenzer got free on the set play and was able to head the ball into the top of the net and give Penn St. Abington the overtime victory.Â
"It was a well played game on both sides," Craul said. "We can't hang our heads. They finished a good opportunity and we didn't take advantage of our opportunities."
Each team had 21 shots, while the Nittany Lions held an 8-5 edge in corner kicks.Â
Lancaster Bible will take a quick break from North Eastern Athletic Conference play on Saturday as they travel to upstate New York and take on Houghton for the first time in program history. The Highlanders, like Lancaster Bible, are in NCCAA Division I, and are 4-4 so far this season. It will be Homecoming at Houghton on Saturday and Craul said he hopes the Chargers will use the opportunity of playing a good team in front of a big crowd to grow and learn something for later in the season.
"It will be a good test," Craul said. "I think tonight was good preparation for us. Like Abington, Houghton will possess the ball well in the midfield and we will need to defend well. It's nice we get the chance to play a fellow NCCAA Division I team during the regular season and we are looking forward to the challenge."
Saturday's game is slated to begin at 1:30 p.m. Lancaster Bible will return to NEAC play on Sunday for a rare Sunday afternoon tilt against St. Elizabeth that is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
Notes:-Penn St. Abington defeated Lancaster Bible, 1-0 in last season's NEAC Semifinal as well.
-Lancaster Bible still leads the all-time series, 5-4-1 over the Nittany Lions.
